Alabamak1 got a reaction from Faye Faye in Apply for EAD right away or wait until after marriage?
first thing first and go to social security office and apply for SS# as of right now. After you have applied for SS# then get married in the courthouse and file immediatly for AOS/EAD/AP, so you can get these documents sooner than if you wait pointlessly till February 16

don't stress. the process through immigration is not an easy path, no matter what type of visa. Relax, do your research and be prepared.

agreed, but even for couples with short periods of knowing each other....me and my wife for example. We knew each other short time and I took multiple trips just to see her every so often and paid for airfare to my home country for her to meet my family and me to see hers. Getting her here stateside and doing trips around the state(s) to visit places so she doesn't get bored....this is daunting if not planned properly.

    Financial Cosponsorship
Nearly all consulates will allow a financial cosponsor for either fiance or spousal visa processing. A notable exception is the U.S. consulate in Manila who will not currently allow a financial cosponsor for fiance visa processing. In Manila, you must qualify on your own or your fiance will be denied the fiance visa. A financial cosponsor is allowed for all marriage visa processing by rule as well as for stateside adjustment of status to become a permanent resident green card holder.

yes, as long as you are using a co-sponsor. Don't take my word on it, since i didn't need a cosponsor, but that is the normal path. I will try to find it where it is so stated.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but when i did AOS through my sister, that is something i came across. To answer OP, yes, the petitioner needs to be alive till the GC or benefit is granted. Not neccesarely in the interview, but till the process has been adjudicated

have you guys thought of CR-1 better if you have a budget problem? K-1 and time w/o work permit can and will be very expensive. I can tell you from my unemployed wife that stopped working back in Ukraine 1 month before and 7 months here. So no income from her. We manage just fine, but it is not the case for most people

Nope.  Husband applied for SSN the day after POE, before our wedding even.  He received it before we filed for the EAD et al.

Don’t do the crime unless you can pay the time.
Not working for a while is a cost of the K-1 process.

I know you mean well but you are just one fish in a big pond of fishes going through the same thing. If this was about society and value USCIS/state department would have approved every petition or application within days. I get from your view that the whole system sounds unfair but that's just the nature of the beast (AKA US immigration). You as an individual or as a couple could have gone the CR1 route if you wanted to work right away but you chose the K1 route and unfortunately that's one of the disadvantages of K-1.

I didn't mean it like that. What I was trying to say is.....all the USCIS cares is the marriage certificate to file for AOS. Ceremonies are not necessary and are just proof for bonafide marriage for your later interview.

From what i can read of your post, you would like to look for a job sooner than later, the only way on speeding this is getting married at the courthouse and filing for AOS

Since you are close to getting the interview....and hopefully approved. My recommendation is to get SS# filed for as soon as you get stateside, before getting married. Then file shortly after for AOS. Life will be much simpler this way. AOS is usually anywhere between 3 months to maybe 2+ years.  EAD/AP is anywhere from 4- 6+ months if you  unlucky.

normally, it does not take few months to get a police certificate. Best is to phone the embassy from the place you are trying to get a police report and let them help you. Like I stated before, the more recent the less hassle it is to show this document(s) at the interview. Proving one has not been back to that specific country is best shown by current and expired passports if available.
