I don't have an oath date yet. Currently waiting for interview, but looking at trends of oaths, I am expecting my oath to be on or about Oct 17. I am due to fly abroad on Oct 25.

If this is how my citizenship processing timeline unfolds, I know the only hope I have to get a passport in time is to apply for urgent one day processing at a passport office. How realistic is this though? What are the odds of getting an appointment at a location that is drivable from where I live?

Any other ideas anyone has on how I can not postpone an oath, and still be able to travel?

Is your Canadian passport still valid?

i would plan to use that and take a copy of the naturalization papers with you for your return

I would not think u could get the US passport in time unless you expedite it and then u still may not get it in time

Once you take the oath, you must exit and enter the US via a valid US passport.  I have seen others successfully get an urgent passport same or next day when travel was scheduled.

This is exactly what the oath letter says about postponing the oath:

YOU MUST APPEAR FOR THIS APPOINTMENT - However, if you are under self-isolation or quarantine, are ill, have any symptoms of illness or are at heightened risk due to age or an underlying health condition and would like to reschedule your appointment, call the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283 (TTY 1-800-767-1833) as soon as possible to reschedule your appointment. There is no penalty for requesting that your appointment be rescheduled.

COVID-19 Safety Precautions - To ensure the health and safety of all who enter USCIS facilities, you must take the following safety precautions when arriving for your appointment:

• DO NOT arrive more than 30 minutes prior to your appointment time. You will not be permitted entry into the office until 30 minutes before your appointment.

• Check www.cdc.gov for the county COVID-19 Community Level where you will appear for your appointment to understand the prevention steps for that location.

• Follow local USCIS guidance while inside USCIS facilities.

• You may have to answer health screening questions before entering.

• Bring a black or blue ink pen with you to your appointment.

Who should come with you? - You may be limited in who may attend your appointment with you in person.

• If you do not speak English fluently and are eligible to take the appointment in a language other than English, you should arrange to have an interpreter come with you to the appointment or be available via phone. If you need a Sign Language Interpreter or Certified Deaf Interpreter, call the USCIS Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283 as soon as possible.

• Your attorney or authorized representative may come with you to the appointment or be available via phone.

• If you have a disability and have an individual who assists you, that individual may come with you.

The naturalization ceremony is a solemn and meaningful event. USCIS asks that you dress in proper attire to respect the dignity of this event. If you cannot come to this ceremony, for a reason other than noted above, return this notice immediately with a written explanation on why you cannot attend to the office with jurisdiction over your naturalization case.

To find the correct office with jurisdiction over your naturalization case, visit the following website for more information: www.uscis.gov/about-us/find-uscis-office. You will then receive an appointment for a ceremony at a later date. If you are in the military, you may contact the USCIS Military Help Line for assistance, at 877-247-4645. To request a disability accommodation, go to www.uscis.gov/accommodations or call the USCIS Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283 (TTY: 1-800-767-1833) as soon as possible. For more information, visit www.uscis.gov/accommodationsinfo.

My wife had her passport 4 days after her oath by visiting a Passport Agency.  Research the Passport Agency in Portsmouth, NH (I assume this based on your profile), and see what is needed to set up an appointment for an expedited passport.

You can get same day service if you can get an appointment. Getting the appointment used to be the hardest part but I think it's getting easier nowadays. there is an extra charge for it, but you'll have your passport in hours. (30 minutes in line for the appointment and then wait a few hours to come back and collect the passport). Great thing is they give back your certificate when they hand you your passport.

I went to DC so parking was a pain but other then that it was pretty straight forward. You must have proof of travel plans (hotel reservation will do it) and you can only schedule max 10 days out.

Traveling as a US citizen, you are required to enter and leave on your US passport. You will be let into the country without a passport but you get to spent time in secondary and are looking at potential fines if you do it intentionally.

Thank you everyone for the advice.

By looking at previous posts here and and on Reddit where people tried to get same day passport by appointments at passport office, it was a very stressful experience. People often had difficulty securing an appointment and had to travel hundreds or thousands of miles.

I do think the situation may have improved recently from what I am seeing as availability at my local passport offices.

I will update here on my experience if I do end up in a scenario where I need to apply for an urgent passport.

Please do so regardless!

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Its the only way you will get it. I did mine 3 years ago.. had to do a 5 hr drive to the nearest  passport office. The only challenging part was the snow storm on the way there, the passport office closing due to weather … but i stayed overnight in the area and they saw us all the next day. Very professional and efficient.  3 hrs from entering the office to returning to pick up the passport. That was the easy part.
