My parents got their Immigration Visa recently- late November.

They are planning to come over next month (Jan 2023)

Is it risky to book a round trip for them duration of a week because they still have some ties overseas?

Thank you,

Green cards are for living in the USA.

To mitigate an accusation of abandoning status if they stay in the USA 7 days, they should not go abroad for more than 6 days.

They should consider a re-entry permit, I-131. This can be filed  from inside the USA.

@AhmadSYR when do their IR-5 visas expire? Can they do whatever they need to do back in their home country and enter the US with intention of living here before immigrant visas expire?

I understood it differently . I understood it as: OP is not saying they're staying for only seven days. OP is stating that their trip overseas will only be for seven days. The wording is weird though.

I see where you are coming from, I read it that they are coming on a round trip for 7 days to activate the GC and come back full time later.

This changes everything. Surely they can travel for a week as they will get a stamp in the passport serving as green card for a year.

Yes, now I understand where you and the rest are coming from, too. Hopefully OP will come back to clarify.

Thank you,

Are they planning to live in the US permanently?  Or spend more time in the home country?

I meant that they are traveling here to the US for 7 days (their ticket to the US a round trip).

I am asking if its risky to have a round trip instead of one way because this will be their first time entering the US.

The risk is they plan on stating the USA for just 7 days and apparently not living in the USA.

I assume they are intending to live in the USI entered on a return ticket, cheaper than a single

The first time I entered the US i stayed about 4 days.  It won't be an issue at all. The person who validates your visa does not check these things.
