i130 filed over a year ago and no action

My wife filed an i130 June of 2021 to bring her sister here form Thailand and all it says is "

September 27, 2021

Case Is Being Actively Reviewed By USCIS

Is this normal? What happens next and when?

Even after the I-130 petition is approved, it will be many  years before a visa number is available.  Siblings whose petitions were filed in 2007 are just now obtaining visa numbers.

I realize it tales a long time, but I thought that after a year there would be "some action" 😕We filed the petition in June of 2021 - is it normal for it to go this long without any action at all? What is the normal amount of time to get some sort of reply?

Completely normal.  It could 15 years or more to receive the visa.

Well, we filed my wife's I-751 in March 2019.  We haven't heard anything since May of 2019..... That's more than 3 years with no action.

The file will just be sitting in a pile and will be touched may be several years later. Does your wife's sister have younger/minor kids? If so she should pray that the uscis takes more than 12 years to approve i130 so that they can immigrate even if their real age is much more than 21.

We just finished petitioning my wifes son with an I130, F2A category, so visa is available, took about 12 months for USCIS approval, so you should be close to that. Not sure if you will do the NVC stage yet, or if they wait until a visa is available. We uploaded everything to NVC, and then it took them about 75 days to approve all the documents and become qualified, and another 3 weeks to schedule the interview. Interview is next month at the embassy. So about 15-16 months total invested for a visa that was current. You may see an approval notice soon, but then I think nothing will happen until the visa category  becomes current. Once you get to the NVC stage, things move faster it seems, but I think you are a ways from that.

You do realize sibling visas are taking 15-20 years, right?

I've seen some family preference I-130 for siblings and married sons/daughters take about 5-7 years for approval.  Then it will sit idle at NVC until about a year or so from when a visa is anticipated to be available.   Expect about a 14 year wait until the next steps of the process.

I believe that's relatively normal for sibling petition - since the visa availability is so far out - they get the lowest priority because there is no reason for them to be prioritized over any other category. This can help with CSPA of dependent if someone ends in that situation - so can be a blessing with no real drawback.

My wife recently applied for her mother and was going to apply for her 3 sisters. I advised her to just apply for her mother because that process only takes about a year.

When her mother gets the green card, then she could apply for her unmarried adult children.

That process would take about 8-9 years compared to the 14-16 years it would take if my wife did it.

It does take 7-8 years if mother is a citizen but waiting 4-5 years to become a citizen would actually make it a longer process.

Of course, if any of my wife's sisters were to get married, then the mother would have to be a US citizen to file for them. That process would take 13-14 years and then in hindsight, it would have been best for my wife to file for them.

So many different scenarios!
