It's usually recommended to get the SSN right after entering the US and before getting married. When did you enter the US with the K-1 visa?

We thought to apply after marriage to have new surname on social security number. I entered US in the end of June and got married couple days ago.

Some have reported issues with mismatch of the new surname when compared to the surname on the I-94. But you should still contact SSA and request an appointment ASAP: https://www.ssa.gov/coronavirus/

I need help with my Social Security Number (SSN)

We are prioritizing requests for in-person SSN services for:

  • Individuals age 12 or older applying for their first SSN card.
  • Individuals who need to update or correct their SSN information (such as your name, date of birth, or citizenship) to obtain income, resources, or medical care or coverage, or other services or benefits (for example filing a tax return, applying for housing, or seeking an Economic Impact Payment).

If you believe you qualify for an in-person appointment, call your local office. You can look up the phone number for your local office by accessing our office locator. Please note that appointments may not be immediately available, depending on local health and safety conditions and staffing.

Your current window for SSN is very short. The deadline is 76 days from US entry: https://secure.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0110213300

If, within the next 14 calendar days from the current date, either the person’s lawful alien evidence expires or the person’s lawful alien status expires, do not process the SSN application. In these situations, SSA cannot print and mail the SSN card to the applicant before the lawful alien document or alien status expires. Instead, provide written notice (SSA-L676, Refusal to Process SSN Application) to the applicant explaining why you cannot process the SSN application and delete the application.

Your next opportunity for SSN would either be when you get the EAD or GC.

OH my God, feeling a little stressed now. We are on day 50 out of 90... Also they didn't give me anything at the border customs in airport. Where do I find I-94?

Yep, you should have already applied for the SSN by now before marriage. Now it is to late because you are married and there will be a name mismatch

Overall the best practice is to apply for SSN before marriage (and then later update the name when EAD or GC is issued with new surname).

That blog only focuses on SSN in relation to work authorization. But SSN can also be provided when doing non-work activities (i.e. opening bank accounts, etc.).

That is unfortunate.  You may be out of luck on the SSN for many months.

Ohh.. Can't I get SSN number right now? As I understand next we need to fill out and send I-485 form for adjustment of status? Will I be able to travel within US when 90 days expire but before I get the some kind of answer from government?
