Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband, has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace has announced.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

The prince married Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen, and was the longest-serving royal consort in British history.

So many don't seem to know that he was a man that had an incredible life story... but he seemed to live it to the fullest. It must be very difficult for the Queen right now.

And she did! Too pregnant to fly to her husband’s grandfather’s funeral but wasn’t too pregnant in 2019 to fly to New York for a baby shower 6 weeks before the baby was born.

Or.... maybe it's a different pregnancy from her first? A pregnancy that quickly followed a miscarriage? I don't judge the choices pregnant women make about preserving their health and the health of their growing child. 

 

More shockingly, maybe the funeral could be about Philip and we could stop talking about Meghan in all this. Does anyone really care if Mike Tindall shows up or not? Jack Brooksbank? Also non-royal spouses of Prince Philip's grandchildren.

I assume they will be limited to 30 at the funeral, and the reason she gets attention is that she is so divisive. Generally the others are not. Well nothing like the same extent.

 

I know Phillip wanted a relatively low key affair, he was not one for the spectacles so Covid has helped.

The saying damned if you and damned if you don't applies here really. If she doesn't attend they'll say she's a harpy and vindictive. A non-supportive wife that just can't let go enough to bury someone. If she attends they won't stop talking about her. Every moment and movement will be scrutinized. And either way they'll say she's trying to usurp attention. It was almost immediate in the British press.

But why do you think she generates this kind of reaction all the time but the spouses of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, for example, do not?

One only need to look at the history of this family and their relationship with the press to determine the answer. Meghan is not the first and she won't be the last to feel the wrath. She won't be the last woman to be an outsider and an other. The press doesn't need to attack the male spouses of Beatrice and Eugenie, because they already spent a significant portion of those girl's lives attacking them as being ugly, having an unruly mother, and having a perv for a father. When they weren't busy doing that they were obsessed with Diana, Charles, and Camilla. Obsessed with the Harry and William. Before that it was Princess Margaret. Philip and Elizabeth themselves haven't always been able to escape it either. But the Firm always tries to choose very carefully who is in and who is out, who can be paid off, and what can be leaked out. Over the years you can observe carefully what narratives are allow to flourish and what ones do not. Monarchies have to stay relevant somehow, or else they will die.

I don’t really read “that sort” of newspaper so I don’t recall Beatrice and Eugenie being called ugly and the references to their father being a perv I can only recall from very recent times when the whole Epstein scandal broke. However I’m not surprised to hear that from the tabloids. 
 

But I am trying to think of a time when other spouses publicly humiliated and insulted the royal family and I’m struggling. 
 

For me personally, the biggest - no, the only -  reason I don’t like prince Harry and Meghan is their complete hypocrisy on climate matters. “Do as I say not do as I do” should be their motto. Lambasting the average Brit who wants to take off by plane to the sun for 2 weeks in the summer whilst they took 53 long-haul flights in the same year, many of them by private jet. It’s not their place to dictate how their wage-payers spend their free time. It’s in very poor taste. And then came the Oprah interview and doing things in poor taste sunk to a whole new level.
