The reality is that certainly where I am very rarely need to put one on, meeting up with a friend for a beer later and you need one to get to your table, a bit weird, at least one local restaurant no longer requires it.

Because once you sit down at the table you are in a virus safe zone, but while walking to the table, it is a virus gauntlet.  Hopefully you have a good IPA.

My best guess would be until herd immunity us achieved, either by vaccination or natural infection.

You mean the unicorn aka herd immunity?

I had to google that one. I know Gaslighting because a certain poster used it at least twice in every post

Most likely, it's because they understand that people can spread viruses even if they are immune.

Agree but at what point, is it on those that refuse to get vaccinated. I should not have to wear a mask for their lack of understanding of science

Well like I said, we will reach a point one way or another where most people have formed immune response to the virus. That will either be by vaccination or by acquiring the infection. At that point it won't be a pandemic, although the longer we let the virus hang around, the more likely it becomes endemic. Either way, masks will probably be optional at that point.

If I had to refine my guess, I'd say probably once kids start getting the vaccine.

And since vaccines are available to everyone now, it's on those to either get it or suffer the consequences so that the rest of us can ditch the masks. Fortunately in many areas where I am this is understood and the masks are starting to go away.

Vaccines are not available to anyone under 16 yet, and it's unlikely we will reach herd immunity until they are. The preceding comments were on CDC guidelines for wearing masks, not which municipalities choose to institute a mask ordinance. Many place have dropped mask requirements, or will drop mask requirements in the near future, but the CDC guidelines are not likely to change until enough people acquire immunity.

Today is exactly 2 months after my second injection.  Time to check out the 95% effectiveness of my Pfizer vaccine.  We have friends from Russia visiting us for three weeks so decided to make the LONG trip from SW FL up to NOLA.  Arrived early this evening and walked 1 1/2 blocks to Bourbon street.  Quite a large crowd especially considering it's a Thursday night.  Masks?  Well, looks like life is returning back to normal as probably less than 5% on Bourbon street are wearing them.

It pains me to say this, but Bourbon street is more active and wild than Duval street in Key West.  Just to be sure, we will be in the Keys next weekend for a true comparison.

Spent last weekend in the French Quarter.  Mostly the same disgusting human filth that always abounds there, what with people using the bathroom on the streets, the homeless, the trash everywhere.  But it WAS refreshing to see so many people pushing one another aside without wearing masks.  Businesses that had "masks required" signs on the door, but 80% of the patrons weren't wearing any masks.  Even in my hotel, entering and leaving without a mask, no one said a word.  I for one am VERY happy to see this happening.

Different state, different town tonight, celebrating a friend's birthday, and we went into several restaurants, bars, and hotels without masks on, and no one said a word.   Again, a pleasant experience.  Still amusing to watch the (ever smaller) handful of Karens who step into the street to avoid those of us who don't buy into the "social requirement" BS of wearing a mask to make others feel comfy walking along the sidewalks.

What about the most recent studies that show masks are essentially ineffective in controlling covid?

Were those studies held in Singapore, Tiawan, Tokyo, Taipei, or at the Four Seasons Landscaping Christmas Party?

Certainly the down side of people not getting vaccinated and then getting sick is that it allows for more mutations and more virus variants that may cause another round of illness that we are not immune to.

Isn't that the truth.  After the first night avoided Bourbon Street at all cost.  And why is it every kid with a bucket thinks he is a drummer?
