  • Top White House economic officials published a study last year warning that up to 500,000 Americans could die in a pandemic that could also inflict $4 trillion of damage to the economy.
  • "Tens of millions of people could become ill, with many requiring hospitalization; and a significant number—especially among the vulnerable elderly population—could die," the study said.
  • The study, first published by The New York Times, undermines the Trump administration's argument that the public health and economic crises from the virus were unexpected.

Exactly, more proof that the Trump administration has been late out of the gates on the epidemic. Thanks for agreeing!

And a lot of people calling Trump a racist for ending travel to/from China.  I will say, he should have shut off travel to Europe much sooner considering their lackadaisical response, and this is one of the reasons we are seeing a lot of issues in NY, NJ, MI etc.  Doing that sooner may have reduced the cost and limited it more to just the airlines.

They actually didn't end travel to China. That's how the virus got in.

The argument would be there was no reason to have half measures. If you are ending travel to an area, you probably also need to quarantine the people you do let back in from that area.

I seem to remember our flights being canceled.  I do agree, the remaining flights arriving until they ended should have had the people on them put into forced quarantine.  The media would have loved that in late January.  Of course there is always the possibility that the virus was spreading way before January.

Several of us volunteered to have blood drawn to be "negative" samples for serology validation. I am curious to see if any of the negatives come back as positives. The method detects IgG and IgM antibodies, so it should also give some indication if exposure was recent or some time ago.

I know a guy who had all the symptoms of Covid-19 after coming back from India last year. He was in ICU on a ventilator for 2 weeks and he was on supplemental oxygen for weeks after. We were discussing a while back how they tested him for every possible pathogen they could think of at the time and everything came back negative. I haven't talked to him for a while, but I would be curious to see what his results are if he ever has Covid-19 serology testing done.

I talked to my Dr. yesterday via telemedicine on an unrelated issue, but I mentioned to her that I had symptoms similar to those of Covid19, but much more mild, except for the cough that was pretty bad after I came home from China in December.  I told her if antibody testing is being done to let me know.

There is a news person on a SoCal talk show that @laylalex loves that said back in January her husband came down with the above symptoms minus the ICU. He tested negative for the Flu but now legitimately thinks he had Coronavirus back then.

I imagine the serology tests should be widely available soon. They are much simpler than the molecular methods to detect the virus during infection. The only problem is they are not really diagnostic for testing for an active infection, but would let people know if they have been exposed in the past.

I'd say someone needs to track this guy down posthaste and have him tested!

I remember discussing a few weeks ago that it almost seems like some people have an immunity to it. It's novel, highly infectious and spreads asymptomatically,  but at the same time they are predicting 10-20% of the population will get it. Just speculation I guess, although they could actually get a better idea once serology testing picks up.

As a parallel though, they have brought up a few times how the 1918 Flu virus mutated into a more virulent form and killed way more people in the "second wave". It's hard to find anything conclusive, but anecdotal evidence suggests people who caught it the first time and recovered were either immune or got milder symptoms during the second wave. Kind of makes me wonder if they'll eventually find something similar with how Covid-19 spread.

How do we know Europe and the US aren’t dealing with a more virulent second wave mutation right now?
