Even more galling is that for the greater part metric has replaced imperial measurements in the UK. Most people I know of my generation over there thought my lack of familiarity with measuring weight in kilos was quite amusing. Then of course, Americans tend to be quite amusing to the British in any aspect that might open them to mockery or deeply passive-aggressive commentary.

There is a subtext somewhere in there...

Please be wary of using that term so often.  It has a triggering effect on some.

If by triggered you mean a coughing fit  from laughter at the idea of a pseudo-intellectual tossing out terms they don't know how to define let alone apply or synthesize into new ideas of their own making  (Bloom's level 5/6) while still delusional enough to feel they have mastered the concept...... yes, triggered.

An Englishman on his first trip to the U.S. was touring the farm belt.  Impressed with the voluminous agricultural production, he asked his American guide what was done with the excess.

"We eat what we can, and what we can't, we can," replied the guide.

The Englishman found this hilarious, and he related the story to his countrymen once back home.

"And do you know what the Colonist said to me?" he asked.  "He said, 'We eat what we are able, and what we cannot eat, we put into tins!'"

We are going to be the last country in the world to convert to metric. Instead we hang on to using the system that was given to us by the country we fought a revolutionary war to gain independence from. The USA is the definition of conservatism. You are right, change does not come easy.

You know, it really is not that hard to use both, simple mathematics.

My vet clinic weighs animals in kilos or grams.  Medication is generally best given to body weight in these measurements. People are so confused when they see their german shepherd or lab weighing 35.5 on the scale.  It's comical really (omg i thought my dog weighed 80lbs! 35lbs?! Nono.. 35 kilograms...) When i worked there i had a fun time telling people who said to use "a real weight" that the usa and one other country were the only ones in the world still using the imperial system and their dogs medication would be based of the metric system so it was just one less peice of math for the vet, but I'd do the math for them! Then I'd spit out the weight in #s.  (78.1)

The math is not really that hard.  I switch between metric or MKS regularly with imperial.  Working in the automotive field, everything we do and have done for more than 30 years has been in metric.  Btw, I report my dog weight in kg to my HOA.

Anyway, here is an example where the math was not done correctly.  Luckily, it was a relatively minor failure effect.

Then in 1999 the Mars orbiter crashed because the project used both.

"The primary cause of this discrepancy was that one piece of ground software supplied by Lockheed Martin produced results in a United States customary unit, contrary to its Software Interface Specification (SIS), while a second system, supplied by NASA, expected those results to be in SI units, in accordance with the SIS. Specifically, software that calculated the total impulse produced by thruster firings produced results in pound-force seconds. The trajectory calculation software then used these results – expected to be in newton seconds (incorrect by a factor of 4.45)[16] – to update the predicted position of the spacecraft.[17]"

This is an example of poor systems engineering where two stakeholders were not properly connected either via an interface control document, or a systems technical specification.  Again, simple math.

Of course AOC thinks dems are center. She is looking from the edge of the left cliff after having bounced thru the Left ditch.

As for Gaslighting. I got to read up on it. Not sure what it is.

I completely agree.  At home all my temperature displays are in Celsius (I considered Kelvins), and my preference is metric, but I can survive in a world where 0.62 miles ~ 1 km.

Btw, I thought you would like the Gimli Glider reference.  :)
