New Healthcare Requirements for US Immigrants

Visitor insurance often does not cover immigrants. Sure they'll sell it to you, but good luck ever getting them to payout if you make a claim.

Being able to cover his medical expenses + insurance coverage is the key item (assuming he is not of an age where he will be working for years).

The current declaration states your husband must present evidence that he will obtain health insurance within 30 days of entering with his visa; unless we are given clearer instructions after the injunction hearing on Friday, he would be find bringing a copy of your health plan with an affidavit from you saying he will be added once in the US.

My wife had two minor siblings interview at the embassy in Manila, Philippines last week and no mention was made or asked about health insurance. Visa's approved with no problems

Recently arrived Greencard holders can apply for Obamacare aka affordable care act  via Federal or state Healthcare marketplace. If you cannot afford the premiums, you qualify for federal subsidy.

I would think getting health insurance is a highest priority for any family member arriving in US.   This  30 day rule shouldn't be an issue unless you don't care about the wellbeing of the person you are bringing into US...

Well, you can qualify. People with no income generally don't meet the requirements for subsidy and are directed at public assistance options (of which most immigrants don't qualify for at least 5 years).

All I can say from experience is that the interviewers love original copies if you can express those. I am not sure how that works for emails and such.

I am just now reading about Visa's may not be issued if there is not evidence for Insurance coverage. I will be adding my husband to my insurance through my work, but have to wait until open enrollment. Can I buy a short term health insurance plan and would they accept that has having health coverage? Also, how do I inform the Embassy that my husband will have health coverage? 

 

we are anticipating his Visa to be issued in the next 3 weeks and I am now panicking that they may not issue his visa.

This proclamation is currently on hold still. See https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/Presidential-Proclamation-on-Health-Care.html.

No need to wait until open enrollment - once he enters the US, that is a qualifying life event (QLE) for a special enrollment period. This would be after he enters, but showing that he will be eligible for coverage through your employer's plan would likely be satisfactory (I only say "likely" as nobody can say 100%, especially on something that has never been in force).

Can someone share if their parents has interviewed for IR5 Visa this month and if the consular officer ask about health insurance while the proclamation about health insurance is effect.
