Thing is.. I remember a day when it was safe to walk around at night. And in the city because we all had no air conditioning, you'd either sleep under the stars.. or have all the doors and windows open. I felt kind of weird walking around my husband's city at night, but it was so safe, he barely gave it a second thought. Can't do that around these parts nowadays.

If you have an orange tree in your yard and you reach out your window to pick one, they mug your hand...

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Same here.  One thing for certain, we went from a lawless society full of strong people to a society full of laws that also has a lot of weak and lawless citizens.  It is a sad transformation.

That was something I had been thinking of, initially it was in the context of people getting older and older and the care they need that traditionally had been a function of family/tribal groups and is often now seen to be something that the State should do, and really can not.

Sort of all ties in together so I could write a book but simplistically the factors I was think of include:

Breakdown of family units. This includes many more single, unmarried etc individuals than has been the historic norm.

Reduced family size, I seem to know a lot of people where the effective size is 1. A friend admitted if he went his wife would have to move, she could not survive up here by herself.

So a much more individualistic society.

Next much more specialised, both my Grandfathers could basically look after most things they had to deal with, I think I am sort of OK DIY but there are a lot more things to deal with. Neither had a car, so they did not need to know how to keep one going.

This is more an impression but there seems a lot of people here who are on multiple Meds. What would happen if the supply stopped?

There are many other factors, so I guess what I am saying is that modern day existence is more fragile and more easily disrupted.

My family went through WW2, one side was bombed out, if you took our current system back into that sort of environment begs the question how it could operate.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I am always amazed at the number of folks on regular recurring medication.  As to the grandfather business, I was born after both of mine had passed, so I never got the chance to understand what they were about, but I agree, there are many folks that cannot DIY now days.  I have a good friend that is really good at doing just about anything related to house modifications, he is getting married to another good friend and they are living about 9 months in Scottsdale where he is setting up shop.  Personally, I think he will do well, and I mentioned to him that in a few years when I retire, I would not mind joining him as there are a lot of folks that are willing to pay for someone else to do it for them.

Reduction of the family size is a consequence of the shift from agricultural society (you need many hands to work on the field, and everyone's contribution including young and old is necessary) to the industrial society (efficient distribution of functions, no need to have so many hands to feed people). What was the matter of survival is not a thing anymore because of the progress.

I think this reduction is inevitable just as the progress is. I'm not saying that progress is necessarily good at all the times but I want to believe it's mostly good!

Science is not a liberal conspiracy.

Nice to see an uptick in the Laydeeeez Auxiliary CEHST Battalion posting in here recently. I was pretty sure it was just yuna and me (very infrequently) for a while. Marchons, sisters! Let's put the CHEST in CEHST!

Wait a minute... I think I just objectified myself. 😕

I make fantastic sandwiches, so I am told. There's a three cheese -- fontina, gruyere and cheddar, on homemade focaccia -- I make that just thinking about is making me starving! Really good with a crisp apple on the side and a tart cider.

The wide variety of American sandwiches was one of the delicacies I hadn't anticipated enjoying as much as I do. I'm sure I'll be labeled as sexist for this, but there is nothing quite so  grand as to have your woman prepare and deliver a fantastic sandwich to your living room. (and to counter the sexism accusations, I enjoy reciprocating in other ways to make my SO happy)
