Well if it is just a friends wedding take it in turn, I am sure they will understand, now if it is a child's wedding just suck it up for a few hours. No need to make this more difficult than it needs to be.

It is a friend's wedding, but the wrinkle is the groom has asked them both to be ushers. (The wedding is in East Sussex, we are making a whole holiday of the trip, and will be going up to Scotland afterwards.) My ex asked me to reason with my fiance on his behalf but he won't budge, he's going to take part. And my ex won't budge either, and the groom thinks everyone is just being melodramatic and should just get over everything. I'm kind of with the groom! I'm stuck in the middle of two pigheaded men. 😖

I blame the Groom and he can hardly duck responsibility if/when it all blows up, sounds fun, could make YouTube.

No kidding! There is an open bar too, all signs point towards disaster. A friend of mine who isn't invited asked if the bride could set up a livestream.

Did she want the wedding livestreamed or the after party?

The reception since that's when the real drinking is going to begin. I think everyone will be able to keep it together in the church but who knows what's going to happen when we get shuttled off to the venue. I asked if we could just skip the reception and I got a frosty glare down the nose and a "Layla, if someone is going to blink, it's not going to be me." The happy couple think it's too hilarious. I'm sooooooo over running interference between everyone.

Do not get involved, let them at it, sounds like everybody is aware of the likely consequences.

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I seem to remember it's called "You've Been Framed" over there in Britain. I have a feeling this will not be happening! :D

Back on topic, I saw this over the weekend and wasn't surprised to see South Africa as the worst place for a woman to travel solo (SO many tragic stories), but was again surprised to see how highly the US ranked in terms of safety for a woman: https://www.asherfergusson.com/solo-female-travel-safety/  We should be doing better. 😡

Why any woman, anywhere, would choose to walk alone at night is beyond me.  I would never let my wife do it, outside our immediate neighborhood.   That's just stupidity inviting danger over  to play.  Bad things happen in the shadows...

But you're posting the heritage foundation opinion column man... and that would be like someone posting you a link about disaster Republicans from.. Daily Kos or Welovesocialism.com or something. The author is offering an opinion about Stacy Abrams but not understanding the trappings of his own party for instance, or their own tendency to double down on identity politics. It's the everybody's doing it so let's do it too but not admit we do it motto. Like I said, there is a whole aspect of the current conservative nationalist party around the fear of losing X type of identity and fear of other types of identities. National identity, cultural identity, religious identity, definition of Americanism, and yes even racial identity. That is actually not too different from what's on the other side. The current POTUS utilizes identity politics and his detractors push back using the same tact from a different perspective. People on the R side of the fence might dismiss what happens on the other side, but it's helped to both win and lose elections for them time and time again, depending on what angle of adversarial process they use.

So the GOP is simply the party of White Privilege?  I guess there are a lot of minorities out there that believe the Democrat Fascist Party are really truly in it for them.

Btw, loved the reading, of course opinions and analysis only.  At least in my link it was an actual Democrat politician extoling the virtues of identity politics even though the overall piece was an editorial.  Heck, there is talk Stacy Abrams could be joined with Creepy Joe Biden.

I did like this part from one of the links.  I think there are a lot of evidence of some prominent "L"s from the LGBT community that may have actually applauded the tearing up of the Obama-era rules that essentially gutted Title IX.  So it is now Identity Politics to fight against Identity Politics...

"For evidence of this, look no further than the president’s closing arguments a week before the mid-term elections on November 6th. Worried about the damage that a Democratic wave in the mid-terms could wreak, Mr Trump has fed his base an artery-clogging diet of red meat. Recently leaked news that his administration is planning to rip up Obama-era rules on the treatment of transgender people was a poke in the eye for political correctness."

I have problems with the word "let" there -- I mean, I think I know what you're getting at -- you would strongly counsel your wife against doing such a thing. It's just a sensitivity of mine.

I don't want my fiance walking around alone at night in San Francisco outside of his neighborhood (Cow Hollow), which is relatively safe for the city in terms of violent crime, and he's a relatively young and fit guy. I can't stop him, but he knows how I feel.

Ok, how about... my wife isn't stupid enough to want to walk alone at night, anywhere, and would insist I was with her if she needed to do so.

Better?
