Hey all - not sure if this is the right forum but I am wondering if anyone can point me to a basic template for obtaining an EU passport. My wife and I live in America and are married, went the k1 visa process a year back. She is a Swiss and EU Citizen and we are wondering what it takes to get me an EU passport ahead of moving back eventually. If anyone has any links/docs etc please let me know!

Errrr.... Getting a passport for a foreign country might be more difficult than you think, lol. Assuming you want to live in the Switzerland. You will apparently need about 10 years or residency first. http://lenews.ch/2015/04/22/7-step-guide-to-getting-a-swiss-passport/

 

Dunno about the visa for the US citizen. Since you will need one first.

Try searching the embassy website for Switzerland for information on what is needed and how to obtain Swiss citizenship. I'm only familiar with the requirements for France. Good luck.

I don't believe you can get an EU passport/citizenship without moving here first. Luckily the EU is more favourable to spouses of EU citizens. My wife is American and I am Irish, initially after she moved here she had to apply for permission to stay and these were granted every three months without fuss but no work permit. Eventually we got married and she gained full rights and access to work or social benefits within Ireland instantly. You need at least 5 years rekonable residence or at least 3 years married to be able to apply for citizenship. 

 

The rules are consistent across most of the countries and basic laws are mandated by the head of the EU.

With the notable exception of the UK, it is reasonably easy to move to the EU as a spouse of a EU citizen. That has nothing to do with a passport/citizenship. You'll get a residence and work permit and have to complete 5-10 years of residence for naturalisation. Depends on where you are moving to.

Which EU countries would those be? Does not exist there.

 

If you have the money to spare, you can obtain a Maltese passport for 1.2 million Euros and one year of residency.

France does. After one year married if you reside in France and after three years married if you live outside of France you can request French nationality as long as you are still married and can provide the necessary documents.

My husband is an Irish citizen and we plan to go back and this has been on my mind.  Thanks for your input (especially from Ireland!).  When you say "3 years married," do you mean 3 years married AND living in Ireland?  Looks like some other countries allow citizenship even if you don't live there.  Also, do you happen to know about bringing MY children over, who are over 18?  If not, that's ok.
