My finance arrived from Belize :) January 9th. We applied for a social security number on the 13th they said it would take about 2-3 weeks for his social security card to arrive in the mail. We havent recieved the social sercurity card we have called them and they said that they have to verfiy with homeland sercurity. The problem is that we need a SSN to apply for a marriage liscense, we are getting very worried about the hold up and not sure how to handle it as we have until april 7th however the weeks are passing by fast. Does anyone have any suggestions? Extremely worried that we are going to run out of time before he gets SSN.

Yes, you apply for the Marriage License and when they ask for his SSN just state he is not a USC nor a LPR and as a result does not have a SSN. Most places state that they REQUIRE a SSN, but in fact they do not. A SSN is for TAX related issues only--it is not a form of ID. It is unfortunate that it has become a pseudo national ID number. My friend and I were in Harrisonburg, PA many years ago and the Historical Society had on their sign-in sheet a place for your SSN. I was amazed at how many people put their SSN on the form. My friend and I refused and the guy at the counter was like "okay". Same thing should happen with the Marriage License as the county cannot demand a SSN especially of the person does not have one.

What would you do if he was in the US to get married to you and then going back to his home country? He is not eligible for a SSN under that scenario, but you two still want to get married.

Tell the Clerk of Courts you are marrying a foreign national. No SSN is required for a foreign national. ID is accomplished by foreign passport. Get married !!!

Not quite. Someone that has a social security number is required by federal law to disclose it when they apply for a marriage licence, but if you don't have one then you simply inform the clerk of that fact. No US state requires you to have a social security number before you can obtain a marriage licence. As I said though, if you do have one then you must disclose it, foreign national or not.

SSN is not needed to get married. Tell the clerk your fiance(e) is a non-resident alien and they have no SSN. They will tell you what documentation will be needed instead, which will typically be their foreign passport.

SSNs are NOT required for marriage, only the passport. Go to the local county clerks office and apply for your marriage license (takes about a week) then schedule a marriage with the county judge (usually within a week of scheduling) and voila you are married. Make sure you request (pay) for multiple copies of the marriage certificate since you need those in the future (usually takes about two weeks).

My wife did not have her SSN when we got married.

Did you visit the post office to add your finance's name to the address? Post office will not deliver federal mail typically unless they are notified. We never received our SS card the first time around because I was not aware of that.

eh - applying for a ssn is easy if it's a guy -

go into the ssa office, show passport and i-94, ask for save database lookup on name plus A# .

then if no typos on name or A#, apply, give over the ssa-5. then go back next day, get the number.

if there were typos (and it's a guy) then somethings wrong with the SAVE database - go to CBP deffered inspection office to get that fixed. then go back to ssa office a week later (updates are batched weekly).

Go Get Em, and Good Luck !

ps - if a usps problem, you won't know till you get into the SSA office - but DHS verification on a guy smells of either 1] incompetent human at ssa office or 2] a typo in the SAVE database.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

I had something similar happen to me. I was excited to hear that you did not in fact need an ssn to marry. However that is only sort of true.

My state (NC) Allows you to sign an affidavit if you don't have an ssn, it states: "I do not have an ssn, and I am not eligible to obtain one." As the homeland security delay is not an actual denial of the ssn, we had to wait. If we had gone to the marriage license first, prior to applying for an ssn, it would have been fine. So we had to wait 4 weeks for the ssn card to arrive. The wait time given was 4-6 weeks. It felt like quite the setback after all the waiting through out the k-1 process, but it was a lot easier to have this delay as we were at least together for this one. Just wait the time and it will be alright. Good luck.

I got married to my USC husband in Palm Beach County Clerk's office in West Palm Beach, Florida. We went to get registered and the clerk who took my info asked for my SSN. I told her that I reside in Trinidad & Tobago and am not a citizen or green card holder at this time. She smiled and said "That's ok. Let me just get a copy of your passport. Do you have it with you now?" And that was all! I gave her my passport and she took address info for me and info from my husband and we had zero issues.

We didn't need an SSN for my fiancee, even though the County Clerk's website indicated one would be required for both parties. I called to inquire about that and they said if she didn't have one, that was okay. I went in before she arrived and was able to obtain the license, even without her passport. It really does vary by county, as to what they say is required and what they'll accept.
