Canada has merit-based system. It allows both citizens AND permanent residents to sponsor parents for PR.

    Australia also allows parents sponsorship.

Going merit-based doesn't make it a necessity to end parents sponsorship. In fact, many high-skilled, filthy rich immigrants care a LOT about this. Countries with such policies continue to get those people.

But again, this is an EO. It's not going to be able to change the law and end categories created by law.

It is just a guess on my part, since many do wish to attend with fiancee/ spouse for the interview. The Embassy website still states they are not sure when they will start up again. And it sounds like the ones who had visa interviews scheduled and cancelled will be taken care of first. I am in Vietnam with my wife now, and am enrolled in the STEP program, so I get updates from the Embassy quite often.

Our petition is at Potomac as far as i know now. No date changes since Feb 22.
This big layoff that USCIS is talking about is a bit nerve racking. There's news outlets stating this will all but shut down processing? Crazy

Exactly. Agree. Give them the help they need to continue to function as a part of our country of immigrants.

For whatever reason it may be that you think there will not be an overhaul, and whether or not I may agree with that reason, I do agree with your conclusion. However, I didn't write my representative and senator to ask for an overhaul, just to ask for emergency funding so the headcount doesn't drop by 92% which would all but grind legal immigration to a halt.

And I contest that the budget wasn't set up to deal with a dramatic decrease in revenue. This is a function of government mandated to be funded by fees, however right or wrong that mandate is. Nevertheless, it is a function of government and as such, should be given attention in regards to funding as other entities, namely large corporations, have been awarded attention in the way of funding due to a "lack of planning" for a major pandemic.

I will however email my congressman and encourage him to urge them to get the funding to USCIS and work on their terrible inefficiency.

    I think we all should.

Has anyone thought that USCIS could also manually extend processing times so people are not able to inquire about their cases?
I'm guessing the volume of case inquiries has been through the roof lately. And if the processing can take up to 3 years - the applicant technically cannot start a case inquiry until their case ages 3 years...

I just called my Representative and will call both Senator's offices as well but my primary concern was with funding not inefficiency.
