HabeshaWife2016 reacted to Wuozopo in Renters background check for Permenant Resident issues
I see on your timeline he will be a USC in eleven days. He's been here five years so time to allow him to build some credit. I think you're on the right track now.

Have you tried renting only with your info and just adding him as occupant? Will they need a background check for him if he’s just an occupant?
It worked for us 2 years ago in KY.

Does he have any established lines of credit? That's usually what the rental application checks, resulting in a hard query on your credit report. If you have any credit cards try adding him as a fully authorized user.... they should ask for his ssn when adding him. Within a month he will have the benefit of your credit history.

HabeshaWife2016 reacted to TBoneTX in Divorce before expiration of conditional Green Card advice
Let's please knock off the unnecessarily accusatory posts. The OP simply asked a question.
A perfectly appropriate answer is, "There's no need to tell USCIS a detail like that; simply divorce and file for Removing Conditions with the divorce waiver."

Add the spouse to credit cards, or obtain a secured credit card and have them start working on their own credit score. Heck, even as a new immigrant, he added me to his secured account as an authorized user. Now we both have excellent scores.

HabeshaWife2016 reacted to Dashinka in SSN and K-1: doc from agency requiring SSN
Which means they are an alien legally allowed to work. The SS5 does not ask if they have an EAD, etc., but a K1 can work with the proper documents. This is why you hear everyone recommend a K1 entrant to get an SSN as soon after they arrive since it is legally allowed.

HabeshaWife2016 reacted to Dashinka in SSN and K-1: doc from agency requiring SSN
Technically, A K1 recipient can apply for an EAD immediately upon arrival prior to marriage. Now of course this is a waste of time and money, but they are eligible to work during the length of the I94 with an EAD and an SSC.

HabeshaWife2016 reacted to Rodney1 in SSN and K-1: doc from agency requiring SSN
My subject line says "SSN and K-1" We have a K-1 visa. He is NOT ALLOWED to work. We MUST check 'Legal Alien Not Allowed to Work' . We do not have and will not have EAD.
So I repeat: what doc?!

HabeshaWife2016 reacted to RLA in SSN and K-1: doc from agency requiring SSN
It's not a false statement. "Legal Alien Allowed To Work" is what the SSA's instructions say K1s should use:
https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211530
Also, K1s are allowed to work even before getting married, up to the validity of their I94. At least in theory. They would have to apply for an EAD, though.

If you have never met in person, it is not recommended to marry on that first visit.

HabeshaWife2016 reacted to Shiran in Beware bad information on AOS deadline for K1 (fresh out of jail)
That is not true. My wife has SSN and no EAD or GC yet. It took us 5 weeks, we applied 2nd business day after PoE (before marriage) it didn't come in the mail until about 5 week later. Immediately after we used it to get State ID. This is in CA.

HabeshaWife2016 reacted to Eva_AJ in Beware bad information on AOS deadline for K1 (fresh out of jail)
My understanding is that you can get your SSN before your 90 days are up. Best to do it 2 weeks after your arrival, and at least 2 weeks before your 90 days are up. There is a guide on this on VJ. But please anyone correct me if I am wrong. At least I am planning to do it that way, not sure if correct

HabeshaWife2016 reacted to Shiran in Beware bad information on AOS deadline for K1 (fresh out of jail)
This is why high priority for us was to apply for SSN right away, and then use that to get State ID. No carrying scarlet letter of a foreign passport. No worries about NOAs, or what random peace officers might or might not know.

I'm sure your family will be relieved that you had the sense to see the problem and to take action....

HabeshaWife2016 reacted to bynx25 in Do not Ignore Obvious Signs
It is a difficult situation especially for a woman like myself who is in love, I understand why women stay and close their eye on certain things, the different with me is that I am not up for games or wasting my time, I want a serious relationship and a solid family foundation and I am not going to give away free visas and be screwed in the end having to support him and just the embarrassment of it all, I do not even know you guys personally and I am hiding my identity this way, can you imagine what my family would say? No way, not to me it won't, he can go screw himself and fly a kite .

You are soooooooooo sweet! Thank you dear, I truly hope the same, it feels earth shattering right now, but I didn't follow my own advice and ignored things that I shouldn't have, either way there's no way but up and out, thanksss again

HabeshaWife2016 reacted to Going through in Spouse visa info required urgent
You can't "change" her visa from tourist to spouse.
She cannot cross the border with intent to stay and adjust status from within the USA, your new wife will have to leave the US after marriage and wait out the CR-1 spouse process in her home country.
Edited to add: Just wanted to mention.... Do *not* have her overstay her visit visa thinking marriage to you somehow solves that problem. You are a LPR, not a US citizen...her overstay is not automatically forgiven due to your own legal status since you are a LPR, and she would still need to return to her home country to interview (and depending on how long she ends up overstaying, if she does end up overstaying, can incur a ban).
