Many many places here are operating reduced hours and begging for people. Steak and shake is even putting ads for help wanted in the bag

Many find it pays well to stay home and collect unemployment. A lot easier too.

Yup that. Also cutting illegals out of the market would do wonders or the min wage. Why make 7.25 an hour when you can have babies as a way of getting paid

  We just did an extra $15/hour incentive for people to pick up open shifts. If people pick up shifts over 40 hours, it’s time and a half plus the $15 incentive. No one applies for open positions and we’ve been losing people to other places that give sign on bonuses. We’ve had job postings open since September.

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

That is a fact and it is not hard to notice at all. Also there is starting to be not just labor shortages but product and food shortages.

You can't expect people to come back to crappy jobs that don't pay enough to survive. A lot of the people who suddenly didn't have a job also took that extra time and financial freedom to look for something they actually like doing or jobs that just pay better. Why would they return to crappy underpaid jobs when they found something better that also pays better? Why would they wait for those jobs to return in the first place instead of looking for something else first?

Even things like Walmart's Spark delivery service easily pay 4k a month or more when you do it full-time during weekdays. Why would you go back to an underpaid food service job where you have to deal with (removed) customers when you can do that and set your own hours? It's not like you're getting any benefits with those crappy jobs.

Do we know that the servers/waitresses/wait staff/and burger flippers are staying home on unemployment? Because honestly if my employer decided to get some of those loans, lay me off or fire me anyway, and then complain no one wants to come back to work for their crappy pay and no benefits, I'd be out there getting something better and not looking back. And since there's plenty of people hiring for better pay/benefits I'd say there's lots of options to choose from. I don't know anyone that lost their job in the pandemic that didn't hustle out of desperation and ended up finding something much better.

 

Heck I know of a couple people that had the luxury of quitting their crappy jobs and now makes big bucks at a startups.

The real unemployment rate is around 10%, so either a lot of folks are staying on it, or they are working under the table.  Btw, it is not only restaurants that are having trouble finding people to fill positions, and the whole $15/hr seems a non-issue as many of the fast food restaurants I see hiring in my area are advertising more than $15/hr.  The fact that government has made it very lucrative for people to remain out-of-work, and that society as a whole is becoming very lazy, it is very plausible to believe the reason businesses cannot find workers is because these folks simply want to stay home.

    Since inflation was brought up earlier, it's probably worth recognizing that the failure of wages to keep up with cost of living is also a contributing issue. We have people leaving to take similar pay elsewhere because new hires can get sign on bonuses of $5000-$10000. Usually people have to stay for 1 year to keep the bonus. I think employers in several sectors are going to great lengths to avoid the intrinsic issue. That being, they don't want to pay competitive wages.
