Maybe it means that not EVERY diagnosis of it equals automatic death.  In addition, the aspect of number of recoveries is largely downplayed.

The hysteria the media has created is amazing.  I still question the numbers of the positive cases.  How many of these tests are second or third tests of someone who tested positive?  How many are people with little or no symptoms?  For some reason the media narrative is that with all these state imposed rules that they rely on businesses to enforce, the virus will go away.  When you go back to the start of this whole thing, all the experts were saying we just needed to flatten the curve, they never said that the social distancing rules would stop the virus.  The one item I have been following is the total number of deaths, the up tick in positive cases started a little more than a month ago, but the number of deaths has no followed even 14 to 28 days later.

It isn't just the deaths, it's the hospitalizations. It's the long, excruciating recoveries. It's the unknown toll the virus takes on a survivor in years to come, physical and mental. Death isn't the only metric that is meaningful here. Anyone who says "no one is talking about the recoveries" is misleading their audience. There is plenty in the media about recoveries, the good and the bad. 

 

Wear a mask. Practice social distancing. Wash your hands. Just because you're at low risk doesn't mean you can't catch it or suffer some nasty symptoms that could alter your life. I can't believe I'm writing this 4 months into the pandemic.

Couple points: no not everyone diagnosed with it will die. However there is a good potential that you will die, and rapidly despite all of our best medical efforts. You don't even need to have underlying conditions, though your odds significantly worsen if you do.

 

We also need to be cautious about what recovery means. A person can be recovered and may lead a normal life, but many will have significant long-term issues, possibly for the rest of their lives. Like many more serious diseases we become exposed to, science has discovered that later on in life the impacts and damage to the body may be present which we didn't know about before. More and more people are having long term lung and heart damage, multiple organ damage, clots, brain damage, psychosis or psychological disorder, nerve damage, rashes, relapses, CFS, and MS-like syndrome or MS. I can tell you the first coworker infected at my sister's practice, likely should have gone to the hospital after talking about their experience. But their story is like so many others I'm hearing about. They are still not normal either. Breathing problems, memory lapses, tremor and an inability to hold onto things. We need to closely follow the 'recovered' that had more severe symptoms, but we shouldn't dismiss those who presented with barely any at all.

And just to follow up TB: there was a study coming out this morning of about 1200+ patients from many different countries. Half of all these cases had heart damage. 1 in 7 patients had severe heart damage.

 

Been reading a blog of a couple that are isolating after catching COVID. They are certainly very ill and already had a couple trips to the ER between them. Wife seems to have the brain troubles and the husband is having extremely dangerous BP and heart rate. These are not elderly individuals. Just your average and fairly active American.

Yes, hospitalizations are an issue, but from what I am seeing, the amount of Covid patients in the ICUs is something around 20% at least in Texas.  We also have to face the fact that the virus is not going to go away.  With the estimated numbers of asymptomatic people out there, we knew it was still spreading.

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Florida Department of Health released its daily coronavirus testing report showing a statewide positivity rate of 11 percent, but FOX 35 News investigated and quickly noticed some shocking positivity rates.

Countless labs have reported a 100 percent positivity rate, which means every single person tested was positive. Other labs had very high positivity rates. FOX 35 found that testing sites like Centra Care reported that 83 people were tested and all tested positive. Then, NCF Diagnostics in Alachua reported 88 percent of tests were positive.
