Hey guys

I arrived in the US two weeks ago. I paid my green card fee last week. I called SSN office in columbus to ask them if I could apply for SSN. They told me that SSN offices were closed for public. Just want to confirm from you guys if it is a correct information. Can I apply for SSN online? Or i will have to wait for the offices to open? Thanks for adavance.

Yes that is correct all SSA offices are closed to the public. Unfortunately getting a SS card is one of the few things you have to do in person, but I understand it can be done via the mail, but I would not recommend it as you have to send in your original documents to prove you are eligible and establish your identity. They do not accept copies.

Do you recall choosing "Issue me a SSN" on DS-260? If yes, please wait for few more weeks. If no, you have to wait until SSA office opens again.

As far as the SSN office being closed, you spoke directly with them, this forum isn't affiliated with the SSN office, you got the best answer you could get regarding that.

I would be wary if someone gave you a different answer than an official govt source is giving you.
