Hi all, I had my interview yesterday and got approved so now I'm trying to figure out the last few things before I leave. What health insurance should I be going for before I get my greencard? Will health insurance for tourism/travelling be adequate or should I be already getting something more permanent? I've seen most people recommending getting on your fiancee/spouse's insurance (usually through their employer) but my fiancee is unemployed and on Medi-Cal so that's not an option for me. I basically want to know 1) what kind of insurance to get when I first enter and 2) what to change to when I get my greencard. Any advice or recomendations?

Health insurance for the purpose of travel/tourism isn’t for those immigrating, it’s for travel. Since your fiancé is on Medicaid and you will never be able to get Medicaid you need to buy health insurance  privately- through the marketplace Highly recommend your soon to be spouse to obtain a job;immigration isn’t cheap and he now has to care for 2 people. On $0 income.

My fiancee has savings, and we have a joint sponsor; if money were an issue I doubt we would've gotten approved. My question was simple: what kind of insurance do I need before and after I'm issued a greencard? Obviously I can't get anything permanent on the K1 since I will not be a permanent resident until I receive a greencard. So, what insurance should I be getting?

But if he’s on Medi-Cal he is at below 138% of federal poverty level (unless he’s disabled or over 65). And I don’t know many parts of CA where you can live comfortably at those levels. Let alone support an additional person.

Married: September 27, 2014

I-130 filed: February 5, 2016

SHE is supported by her family financially, and is gifted a lot of money every christmas that she can rely on. Also she lives in a cheaper area and her and her brother live quite comfortably.

After you are a permanent resident you need to buy insurance (choose a carrier) http://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/110-health/20-look/hcpcarriersindividual.cfm

Just be aware receiving large amounts of gifted money puts one over income for Medicaid.

Have you or your fiancé start calling the ca marketplace/state exchange and or call companies posted in the link above.

A lot of K1 visaholders buy a patriot policy.

Dont know anything about that company personally and there are several similar short term policies out there, that’s a start for shopping.

You wont be working for a few months.  Your fiance might need to be thinking about seeking a real job.

She is good financially. You can take her word for it. This is off topic. She’s asking about health insurance.
