Anybody want  to take odds on when, the  we got nothing but free stuff and open borders crowd makes this hurricane a political poo storm, and starts blaming Trump for any negative effect of the storm possible.

I am in with a 3 to 1 on before landfall

I’ll pass. Good luck to you.

It doesn't take a genius (very stable or otherwise!) to know that what's needed of a president in times like these is compassion and money and focus on getting aid to people and businesses. What's not needed is finger pointing and jeering and politicization of a tragedy, and that goes for everyone, president or not. Trump could increase his political capital if he plays this right. He just has to be able to focus on getting it right, not only for himself, but for all the people whose lives will be affected.

How about instead of focusing on the political aspects of this, we focus instead on the people who are going to be affected by it? All this is doing is feeding into the antagonism that is polarizing everyone, and all it is is NOISE. The important part of this story is what is about to happen, and how the government is going to respond to it in the lead up and the aftermath.

We do have a thread for that

I am confused. You just made a post lambasting Trump and now you lambasting discussing the shameful politics surrounding the storm. Funny how it turned on a dime

I didn't mean it to be read as lambasting Trump. What I meant it to say is that Trump has an opportunity to really show this country that he can unite people. When I said we don't need finger pointing and jeering, that means EVERYONE. I don't agree with Democratic politicians jumping in right now and pointing at the diversion of FEMA funds. I cannot stand Trump, I'm sure that's clear. But I'm not a monster, and personally I would like to see him lead this country and unite it right now in the face of disaster. It would be good for him but more importantly it would be good for all of us. :)

My apologies if that wasn't clear.

Edit to add: and yes, you're right we have another thread. Duh, I started it! I should probably eat some lunch, I think my blood sugar is low.

Natural disasters can at times, make or break a Presidency, whether it is fair or not. How a President handles a disaster, especially in how FEMA is directed and people are assisted is often important to people in knowing that their leader actually cares what's going on. Some never forgot how Katrina was handled, some will not forget how Maria was handled, or Michael, or Sandy, Irma, or Harvey. In older times it was Hugo and Andrew. Or the massive earthquake of 94. It often has consequences for local leaders too. When people need help, help needs to come and bureaucracy often gets in the way of that.

btw... I hear this is going to be a bad one. I don't envy anyone riding through it (I've been through some rough ones myself).. hope all will be alright.

The fact that we have a preemptive thread defending Trump for the theoretical criticism he is about to theoretically take for his theoretical inaction/response/whatever says it all.

I would call it more pointing out the complete absurdity of unhinged attacks, to benefit from a disaster, than I would defending Trump.

He has already been called Racist because he canceled a trip to Portland, when he found out a cat 4 storm was going to hit florida and did not when it was forecast to minimally affect Puerto Rico.  That should not need defending to a mentally health person
