Learning to drive - K1 Visa AOS

Like the OP I lived in a place in the UK where I didn't need to drive, so I never learned - so I'm having to learn here. I'm in Mississippi and got my learner's permit - after a fair amount of hassle and 'computer says no' - back in May, before my I94 expired. However, I've yet to do my actual driving test.

Does anyone know if I would need to go through the whole process of proving my identity and that I'm legally allowed to be here AGAIN to get my actual license, or if having done it once for the learner's permit would be enough?

The MS Drivers Service Bureau says I would need to present 'proof of legal presence' but doesn't specify what that needs to be. I'm currently waiting for EAD/AOS so my 'proof of legal presence' is my NOA1.

As long as the system shows that you meet the requirements for your State to issue a license you should be good to go.

Here in CA I only needed to show proof when I first went there for the written test. Didn't need to show or pay anything when I went in for the driving test.

Great! With any luck it'll be the same for me too.

Hey,

in Massachussets they require your SSN and your i-94 which will tell them your current status in the US.

@Scandi, I'm curious. How long is your DL good for when you used your I-94 as your proof of your legal status in CA? Do you think each DMV office would be different?

I tried to get my wife just an ID card in Missouri but since her I-94 and Visa are expired she has to wait until she gets her EAD before they will issue an ID. I took her AOS and EAD NOA1 but which is ok for residency but not for proving her identity or legal status. We need to wait until she gets her EAD. Requirements are the same here for ID and DL.

Hi,

it’s your Social security number.

it was top priority for me to apply rigth after getting married because its needed for a lot of things like opening a bank account, drivers license or even for volunteer programs(which is my case). This will depend on the state you’re in.

Hello anyone from New Hampshire on here? I called my social security office and they said a drivers license isn’t considered a good enough reason for obtaining a social security number, but I don’t know what else to do 😕

K1 first thing you get is a SSN,  most people would say to give it a a week after entry to make sure you are in the system.
