‘Roma’ Cast Member Jorge Antonio Guerrero Denied Visa into U.S.

A Roma film cast member, Jorge Antonio Guerrero, has been denied a visa into the United States to attend events at the height of the annual Hollywood awards season.

But the Mexican actor-who plays Fermin, a brooding militant in the story about a year in the life of a 1970s middle-class family’s maid in Mexico City, said he is determined to keep applying for applying so that he can at least enter the U.S. in time to attend the 91st Academy Awards on February 24, the Los Angeles Times reported.

 

Guerrero, as he is known, is part of a critically acclaimed Roma cast, members of the first-ever Netflix-created movie to secure an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. The film has garnered 10 Oscar nominations, breaking ground for its increased diversity of nominees.

 

Several Mexican media outlets, such as the Mexican daily El Universal, that he is not “offended, angry or victimized” despite the application denials, since the same happens to many other Mexicans.

“I hope that this can be resolved in the best way,” he told El Universal. “And I insist that if I don’t go, I’ll still be thrilled. It’s 10 nominations, darn it. This doesn’t happen every year!”

Martínez wants to secure a visa to attend screenings and other industry events in the U.S., he told the Mexican lifestyle magazine Quién.

 

Despite submitting a letter of proof to immigration authorities from Oscar-nominated Roma director Alfonso Cuaron and Netflix producers, he has been denied visas at least three times, Guerrero said. The letters explained that he has official invitations to appear at the industry events in the U.S.

 

“Specifically, I took a letter and they refused to read it,” he told Quién. “On my second attempt, they said I was going to go work, and I said that, no, I had been invited.”

Well they do ask you why you wish to travel to the United States, and to show the purpose of your visit is only to be temporary.

That is true but they aren't required to look at any invitations. What's curious about this case though is, I know the film has a bunch of other actors from Mexico, and well, did all of them get tourist visas? It is a bit strange if some actors get the visa and others don't, maybe there is something else to the story we aren't being told.

Well obviously we don't know what visa he tried. I would assume it was a visit visa, rather than an O visa? But it does sound like he's applied multiple times in a short period and intends to keep doing that right after he's been denied. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that not what a person should be doing if denied on a visit visa multiple times like that? Guessing it doesn't sound like he has a lawyer. Invite letters I think also won't help in this situation either, as they don't from an overall impression of reading these forums. Wonder if the guy has some way to be contacted, might be a good candidate to come study some VJ.

I believe the term Hispanic is a made up name for the US Census in the 1970's

 

and per the US Census any one can identify as Hispanic

The U.S. Census Bureau defines the ethnonym Hispanic or Latino to refer to "a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race" and states that Hispanics or Latinos can be of any race, any ancestry, any ethnicity.
