I firmly applaud this measure I do. If you came here on a tourist visa and are overstaying then you should be sent home if caught should be sent home. I don't know how long she has been overstaying her visa because it doesn't say in the story. But good job CBP. #MAGA.

I have no problem with them sending her back home. That parts cool.

I do have a serious problem with them boarding a bus, and demanding I'D s if there was no probable cause.

I am hoping , like most "clutch my pearls look at how we are abusing some innoncent immigrant story" thete is more to the story. I do not support and never will stop and frisk style actions

If you live anywhere within a 100 miles of the border they can stop you and ask questions. This is fairly common in the SW actually, they also have semi-permanent offices/checkpoints to stop vehicles and ask questions. It does not matter if you are as pasty white as I am they will stop and as you questions. I had this happen to me one before when a female CBP officer stopped me for 10 minutes asking me questions until I confronted her  by telling her" if she was going to take me back for formal questioning or let me go, because I have at least 4 hour drive back to where I live and work, and yes I work for the government and that's why I am driving a federal vehicle". She ultimately let me go only because I showed her everything she needed/wanted and she didn't think I was running drugs in a Federal vehicle(which is fairly common in the SW is to steal Federal tags and run drugs/people with those plates".

I want to know how long she overstayed for?

So within 100 miles of any coast line they can stop and search me just because,  they choose to.

That's total b.s. and scary

I've seen in the news they do it near the Canadian Border in NH too.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2017/08/29/border-patrol-agents-nab-suspects-seize-drugs-immigration-checkpoint/7ZTt7R5fJ10LhjD08IuVaM/story.html

1) if they are going to ID, I'm fine if they ID everyone on that bus regardless of how they look or sound.

2) Why just limit it to certain proximity of the borders? People can't take buses to reach Nebraska? It would be awesome to see CBP agents ask citizenship papers in a heartland American town. Let's see who keeps a valid ID or birth certificate handy.

They should do it along the California coast.  It would sure make freeway traffic easier.

They used to have a checkpoint on the I-5 freeway right around Camp Pendleton area back in 2003. But when I moved there in 2012 it was already gone and the "Agriculture Checkpoint" is still there for trucks though. You mostly see it coming up on from El Centro on either side of the Salton Sea. The Western checkpoint is great because a majority of the time they will just wave you through after looking in the vehicle. All the while the Eastern side is where I have had the most problems out of CBP. I don't know why that is really, it could be because that side doesn't see near enough the traffic like the other side does or they are just bored. But I have had the stupidest time on that side and I have been stopped at least twice having to answer additional questions. I don't know if it's because I am driving a big Federal vehicle or I am speeding but it really pisses me off.

and this is where racial profiling comes in to play.

How? If they ask everyone how is that profiling?

i was responding to nb's comment. "So within 100 miles of any coast line they can stop and search me just because,  they choose to."

i don't think all americans are on board with the idea that cbp can stop and ask anyone for papers at any time. i'm certainly not. but i'm white, so the odds of me being held and asked are next to none.

Because we live in a country that protects against unreasonable search. When you give random  officers such broad authority, abuse is soon to follow. That is why our founding fathers found it so important to include that in the constitution. Example.. Look at that bus of hippies. Lets stop them and hassle them for a while, with no probable cause.  I believe in Nazi Germany they had to stop and show papers.

Now if they have probable cause, fine or if they are crossing a border fine.

Actually your chances are just as good if you are in the area. I absolve you of your white guilt

I think what VAL is trying to say, is that if you give that kind of discretion at the office level, their is a big chance it will be abused. Hey look at that bus of Hispanics, lets check them or Hispanics tend to take the Bus, so lets go check the bus station
