Traveling on Extension Letter?

I was looking into this for a future trip and found more information on the website of Mexican Consulate in St. Paul. I assume this applies to expired Green Cards with extension letters as well.

• US Residents: If your United States visa stamped on your passport already expired but you have an official document proving your legal status in USA, you must apply for a Mexican visa (I-797 A Forms, Advance Parole Forms, I-20 OR DS-2019 Forms won’t be accepted to entering Mexico), unless you have a valid Visa for any of the countries listed above (Canada, Japan, United Kingdom or Schengen area) .

 

The TimaticWeb2 website that airlines use to verify travel document requirements also shows that you need a Visa to travel to Mexico if you have an expired green card and extension letter.

Simply counter to our experience. As weak as an Indian passport is, a Burmese passport is at least twice as weak. We’ve flown and cruised to Mexico on an expired gc e/ extension letter.

What airline did you enter? Delta will not board you. 
 

If you would feel more comfortable getting a visa you should attempt to do so.

I’m not flying to Mexico though. I understand if an airline won’t let you in but does immigration officer in Mexico recognise the GC + extension letter combo? That’s more my question.

Wanted to add a data point for border crossing.

1st CAN->USA: officer spent 5 minutes reading documents carefully

2nd CAN->USA: the whole agency doesn't have anyone understanding ROC process and questioned the validity of my card. Spent 15 min at the office for secondary inspection.

Another data point for CAN -> USA trip by air.

 

I flew Toronto Pearson -> San Francisco International the other day.

 

Had TSA precheck (wasn't operational, had to go through normal line) and Global Entry for preclearance.

 

All the Global Entry machines were old ones, as far as I could tell. All of them required taking a photo and scanning travel document. I scanned my Green Card instead of foreign passport, because I was under impression I need to use GC only for entering the US. Maybe experienced people can tell me, should have I scanned my passport instead? Both passport and GC are in my GE profile. The system didn't like it, so had to see an agent. He checked my passport, Green Card, asked a couple of questions (where do I live, what was the purpose of my visit to Canada etc). Took photo, took fingerprints. Didn't ask for my extension letter at all.

When was this?

 

CBSA updated its website in April 2022 to clarify that extension letters were acceptable.

You could email the consulate / embassy that's in your jurisdiction and ask! I will most likely do that for a trip that I am planning in March (assuming I don't have the 10-yr green card by then).

because I need to travel to Cuba and when I called USCIS they told me that there is nothing that they need  to do with my case and myy extension is expired, I need to get the stamp
