The untimely passing of SCOTUS Justice Antonin Scalia has created the "Perfect Storm" that may just be the way to liven up this very lackluster Presidential election cycle. The Senate GOP leadership indicates that the POTUS should leave the replacement SCOTUS justice nomination to the next president. The President has indicated that he will perform his duty and nominate a replacement to the GOP-controlled Senate for confirmation. One GOP senator from Texas, who is also a presidential aspirant, has indicated he will filibuster any attempt to have nomination hearings. Is that the same response the last time a lame-duck President, who was in a very similar situation, got when he nominated a replacement SCOTUS justice?

Here is the name of a qualified jurist from California who should be on Obama's short list of possible SCOTUS nominees, Mariano Florentino Cuellar, It would seem that he is a quite educated, well qualified gentleman who was approved by unanimous bipartisan vote to be a California State Supreme Court Justice. If he survives the vetting process, I would suggest that this nominee could be cause for the rabble inside the Beltway to have fits. Who knows he may be just what is needed at the SCOTUS?

This event may indeed interject some life into this somewhat dreary Presidential election cycle.

YMMV.

I heard some hilarious quotes from schumer during Bush's reign that speak ill of the kind of behavior he is today chastising republicans for doing. Love the hypocrisy.

Anyway we all know Obama will nominate a minority or a woman or both. Guarantee.

That article is exactly why with each passing year I dislike progressives more.

Let America watch as old white-guy senator after old white-guy senator goes on TV to say “Oh, it’s nothing against Mr. Cuellar, it’s all about Obama, and the people’s voice.” And let America watch as nominee Donald Trump says the same thing. Or even Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz—in some ways that’s even worse for the GOP, to have a Cuban-American (or Cuban-Canadian-American) stand up and say this Mexican-American doesn’t belong on the Supreme Court. There are around 33 million Mexican-Americans in the country—and around 2 million Cuban Americans.

It's calling out these senators for their race, by being racist, despite the entire premise of the article itself being racist; that Obama should nominate somebody because of their race, to gain votes. It's abhorrent, but that's modern american politics. Race everything even when it shouldn't be. Which is why I said no way a white guy is nominated.

But if he decided to nominate him, boy would it be great to see those people squirm.

Yeah screw what's best for the country. Just whatever is best to make the other side mad. That's really a fine way forward for an extremely divided country. Divide it further by "scoring points" whenever possible.

Good luck!

"The other side" is always mad. I am waiting for at least one brave Republican candidate to stand up and chastise the deceased Conservative Justice for having the temerity to pass away before said candidate wins the election so that he could choose the next Supreme Court justice.

Does it seem odd that a man that such an important figure died outside of medical care, with no known medical problems, was declared dead by a judge that never saw him, embalmed within 24 hours and no autopsy.

Sounds like a Clinton scenario

Hopefully someone has Bernie's eulogy ready to go, he may be next.

What is the logic behind waiting on the next president? The current president has a year left and choosing a person for one of the most important positions we have is this country is his responsibility. I know *why* many want him to wait but I don't see making the claim that its the right thing to do with a straight face....

There's absolutely nothing in the Constitution, or in James Madison's writings, that compels the Senate to provide its "advice & consent" within any time frame.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

eh - it's a urine-streaming contest - it's Mitch's way, really, to tell Banal Barry that regardless of who-ever he sends in for nominations, the Senate Confirmation Hearings, staffed by Republicans, will take an inordinate amount of time and no one will make it out of the committee hearings unscathed, much less have a nomination rubberstamped in the Senate. At least this is the pattern whilst Banal Barry is still in office.

All sarcasm and quipping aside, I think it's time for a transgender human to get through, onto SCOTUS.

Most likely - but they can't complain about the republicans blocking a nominee if one is never sent in the first place.
