Hi everyone!

So my husband and I are delighted to have found out the I am 6 weeks pregnant! Obviously though, our biggest concern right now is that we believe I can't be added to his health insurance until I receive my social security number. Is that correct? My interview is June 19th, and all going well I'm hoping to receive my SS after that. By then though I will be nearly 9 weeks pregnant and I'm not sure I can wait that long to have a professional check me and our baby to confirm that everything is ok!

Can anyone advise me on where I stand? Thank you so much!

(Please note before anyone says it, in an ideal world I would have preferred to have got pregnant once I was on his insurance. I've been blessed earlier than planned!)

While some insurance companies try to get your SSN before they will cover you, it can be done without it. You just need to push the right way with the right people. I got my wife on my employer paid health insurance without her SS number.

In the past you could not get the pregnancy covered, because its an existing condition. With the change in health care laws, you should be able to get covered as insurance companies are no longer allowed to reject or exclude on a pre-existing condition.

You usually have 30 days after a qualifying event to report it ( like getting married ) When I called after we got married the rep took his information and a faxed a copy of the marriage licence and they said they had record in case something came up and to update them with the SS number when it came . If you wait to long to report you may not be able to be added until next open enrollment ( usually effectice jan 1 )

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Looks like she VWP expressed 4 months ago.

You should have obtained cover, legal requirement.

SSN is not the issue, open enrollment most likely is.

1. You can get on insurance without SSN.

2. You will probably have a problem with the enrollment period, as stated.

3. You can get SSN with EAD, which might come before the interview.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

Not having SSN may be the least of the problem with trying to get insurance. As stated above usually employers insurance will allow someone to be added within 30 days of a life event, probably best to find out when your husbands insurance would even be open to you to be added. As Boiler said open enrollment is more likely to be the issue you need to deal with.

That is going to be a problem as you are outside the period of a qualifying life event so will likely need to wait until your husband's open enrollment period, I think that differs per employer but don't quote me on that.

Immigration can be a qualifying life event with some insurance companies. Of course they'll need to dig in and fight for it though, as its a rare case and when something is rare, the low ranking people you deal with often assume it cannot be done.

That was back in Feb.

She came as a tourist then got married. Getting the green card would be the act that makes her legal here, or an immigration event or life changing event. At least thats how I'd try to play it when attempting to get her insurance at this point. I'm not sure if it would fly with her husband's work insurance, but its the only shot they have until open enrollment.

As far as I can see she has been legal all along.

She entered on VWP and within 90 days applied to change status.

Under O Care she would have been eligible when she filed for her GC.

I should have used the phrase, makes her a legal permanent resident. Which is an immigration event. Until that point she was a visitor, then an applicant.

Just to address another aspect of your question: call your provider. They may have a way to see you early - perhaps by giving a discounted cash rate. I'm a new mom and my midwife had one bill for care (lab fees etc were separate but all office fees were one), after my baby was born. A situation like that would have made getting care started not an issue without health insurance yet.

But if you have been married more than 30 days you've missed the ability to be added right now buy make sure you get put on during open enrollment. If that is too far away, getting independent insurance may be a good plan. Giving birth in the US can be expensive, I personally wouldn't want to go long without insurance.
