Love isn't a prerequisite. Arranged marriages are totally a thing.

My opinion after all, i am a little bit of a feminist and i think it is sad that this ancestral practice is accepted in the immigration system of a modern country like the US. It is even sadder that some people agree to the idea that love is not a prerequisite to marriage in 2014... Again that's just my opinion and i was sarcastically reacting to the person who said that, you guys can come back to your topic !

You are lacking cultural understanding if you call arranged marriages worse than a scam.

The world is a big place, please understand and respect honorable cultural diversity.

They are permitted as long as the couple can proof it is a bona fide marriage and if USCIS has no problem with it neither should you.

They aren't even in the same basket as scam and sham marriages.

And I am also a very strong feminist and I know that not all arranged marriages are to the detriment or even against a woman's wishes. I believe that being a feminist means respecting the desires and practices of all women.

And even if you discount arranged marriages, what about two people who are not in love, but care deeply about each other's well-being and want to coparent? I've encountered that arrangement as well and it was to their benefit to marry, so they did.

Mine is not to judge. I love my wife. Dearly. But I also recognize that a marriage is a legal contract between two people establishing a household. That's all it is. You can have love without marriage and you can have marriage without love.

And I have to agree with so many here that we see the worst slices of life. We see the people left by a scammer. We see the people, often women, abused into slavery and terror who are trying desperately to get out. We see the people whose marriages just didn't work out who are trying to claim it was all a scam because they can't imagine any other way a marriage could go sour. People who go on to have happy, imperfect but lovely marriages often don't give us the reports of that.

And the implications early in this thread that people should go home as soon as they divorce really bothers me. It smacks of racism and the idea that people are like purchases to be shipped back if you don't like them.

Yeah go ahead and say that to a genuine couple who was denied a fiance or spousal visa and are unhappy just because a CO decided so because of various reasons such as age difference, country of origin, religion etc...... while those couples who don't even love each other get to enjoy all the immigration benefits of marrying in the US.... i must stop watching disney movies then for thinking that life without love is not worth living... my bad

If the majority of cases were scams, then the US gov would change their protocol significantly. Only a minority of cases are fraud. The US gov has the real statistics on it.

However even if you make some good points about marriage in general, i still think arranged marriage are unethical as they mostly involve money and i am pretty sure even though they don't admit it, it is not by the choice of the involved parties (not only women).

Again that's just my point of view, if i had to be part of a scam or an arranged marriage i would be so bad at it, because i cannot share my life, have kids, share my bed with a man i don't love... gross....

Statistics? I think a lot of ppl does rely on statistics to much for answers. Don't forget that not every scam does be reported. And also can statistics see if a person has a good heart or not? The answer is a resounding no. A scammer can run a scam for 3 years, he doesn't have to stop after he is married. Not all scammers are alike.

Guess what ? I am the half of a couple madly in love that is re filing after visa refusal because a CO decided just that !

I do not begrudge couples of arranged marriages their happiness.

My journey and theirs is not entwined and just because I did not get my piece of pie does not mean they can't have theirs either.

You simply don't understand the depth of an arranged marriage but see it with preconceived ideas.

So it wouldn't work for you and that's fine. Totally fine.

But remember, not everyone is you. And not every arranged marriage is about money. Many of them are about making sure that your child is married to someone who you can trust to make sure that your child will be looked after and not abused. And many arranged marriages are at the choice of all parties involved. Just because you wouldn't want one or I wouldn't want one doesn't mean that they are bad or horrible. It just means that you, personally, wouldn't flourish in one. And that's entirely okay. I wouldn't either. But I also can't see myself marrying a man, at this point in my life. That doesn't mean no one should marry a man!

I can respect your personal choice and would not want to do it either, just try to respect someone else's choice as well.
