  1. Ben,

How will you ship those out to the US? By cargo like boat or UPS? And what was it like for you during the Royal Wedding... did you watch it or have a celebration where you are?

    Mari

Probably DHL/FedEx/whoever - those three boxes will cost me about $320 so far, and I have a lot of weight to go.

I watched the wedding on the tv, no celebrations here, although I think that there were a few around.

  2. I don't think you are getting ahead of yourself, I already have 15 boxes packed and labelled for the border crossing. I also have a log of the contents of each box...as you probably can guess our port of entry is by land.

This way if my Montreal interview is in August I won't have a lot left to pack so we can have our 09.11.11 wedding!

This is virtually all the reduced stuff from the loft of the garage - still have all my books, cds, dvds etc to pack. Luckily, Gin took a big case full of winter clothes back with her to Utah last week, so my clothes are about 1/3 to 1/2 down on where they were laughing.gif

  3. My fiancee has a house, two dogs and is an accountant, so she'd need to do some re-training to stay in the same field if she moved here instead of me to the UK. Along with that, our combined salaries would barely reach an apartment here, let alone a house with room for the dogs.

On the flip side, there's a chance I could continue working remotely for my existing UK employer after moving to the US, otherwise I start again over there. I sold my apartment here in 2009, and am currently living back with my parents, so there's not as much upheaval from this end.

As previously mentioned by others, once I have US citizenship, we may choose to come to the UK until my fiancee (wife, by then) could eventually obtain UK citizenship.

  4. Sometimes, those of us that live in places like the UK don't realise how lucky we are to be in countries that have a high level of organisation - Turkey, along with probably lots of other countries, are a lot more, how shall I put this, 'relaxed' in their way of governmental working laughing.gif

Time to find your list again, Mari - make sure I have everything ready good.gif

  5. Well, Gininda is back in Utah, after a week together here in England - a great week with gorgeous weather, but sad to be apart again.

The upside is, of course, that after the next flight we won't be apart again kicking.gif

She's printed out this year's pay stubs, her W-2, ordered her employer's letter of confirmation, etc for the I-134.

I'll be off to the nearest Snappy Snaps photo shop for some more US-style passport photies and then we should get the LDN case number soon, when I can arrange my medical up in London.

If I get enough notice, my brother has offered to come up to London with me and will wait outside with my phone etc - makes it easier than leaving it somewhere.

I already have 2 copies of my police certificate, 2 certified copies of my birth certificate (plus original), lots of proof of having met since NOA1 and other bits and pieces. Once Gininda's packet arrives, I should be good to go yes.gif

  6. the reason it happened is that type of plane it too big for all airports here. it hangs something like 93ft off of each side of the "lanes" they taxi on

And the 747-800 that is coming along too - some airports are fine with these superjumbos, some aren't. JFK, like some other US airports, had to get a waiver from the FAA to take the extra-large aircraft, so the FAA will now be looking into the incident and the instructions within the waiver documet.

From that video, either the regional jet didn't pull for enough forward or the A380 shouldn't have been released until the regional had cleared to the apron.

  7. Hi all Again :)

I was thinking of taking my medical records when I move to America, but I saw the receptionist and she told me they belong to the NHS so I cannot take them. Do I need them to register with a health center in America or not. Has anyone had this problem.

    Thanks in anticipation

    Dave :)

You can't take the original records with you, but you can take copies, at a cost - I think my doctor's surgery charges £10 for a print-out of the computer-only information, and £50 for copies of everything including the old hand-written stuff.

  8. I'm a bit lucky - had to do a major clear-out in 2009 when I moved back to Somerset from the Isle of Man, so that was a good start. Parents and brother are buying my bedroom furniture, tools and electrical goods apart from the computers smile.gif

The main things going with me are my books, cds, dvd/blu-rays and clothes - Gin is coming over for a week on 16th April, so we will go through the other stuff together, and she's taking a case full of winter clothes etc back to Utah with her good.gif

  9. For people moving to Texas - you have a bonus if you have a French, Canadian or German driving license currently. Once you have done AOS and have your green card, you do not need to sit the written and practical driving tests. People with driving licenses from those three countries apparently only have to take the vision test, and then swap the licenses straight over.

http://www.txdps.sta...cense.htm]Texas Dept of Public Sfaety - Driving Licenses[/url]

The pertinent bit is about just over half-way down:

Currently Licensed in Another State or Country

A new resident moving into Texas, who is at least 16 years or older and has a valid driver license from another state, has 90 days after entry into the state to secure a Texas Driver License. You must:

    • Apply in person at a Texas Driver License office.
    • Complete the requirements for an original applicant (see Requirements above).
    • Surrender your VALID out-of-state learner or driver license, or a VALID out-of-country learner or driver license from France, Canada, or Germany, at the driver license office. The written and driving examinations will be waived, but you must still pass a vision exam.
      OR
Surrender your EXPIRED driver license at the driver license office. You will be required to pass the written, driving and vision exams.
    • If you are under age 18, you must pass the mandatory driving test.NOTE: For customer convenience, some locations are pre-scheduling the driving exam. Contact your local Driver License office to see if appointments are offered.

Now why France and Germany get a freebie, I don't know - I can sort of understand Canada laughing.gif

  10. That's a good idea Christine. Maybe we put one message here and a note on their profile so they know. You can get the notifications when you edit on your profile settings (?) --- check it, I can't remember. Ask Ben (rallybug) he's a techie kinda dude around here. lol

    Love ya!

    Mari

Picking on me, again Mari? laughing.gif I need to find my nerd smiley smile.gif

There are only two ways, that I know of - click the Watch Topic button above the first post on each page, and then choose how you want to be notified on the next screen shown, or by doing the same when replying to a message. Click the green '+' button below where you attach files to enable email notification of replies. Either way should mean that you will be contacted at the chosen interval when anyone makes a post on the thread.

  11. Read this about medical exam today...

"As the medical exam results are normally valid for 12 months, you should complete your examination as soon as possible. You do not need to have received your appointment letter in order to attend your medical examination. An immigrant visa will NOT be issued until a U.S. consular officer has reviewed the results of the medical examination for each applicant."

If the medical is valid for 12 months, do we even have to wait for the NOA2 to complete the medical??

Yes - you need to have your embassy case number before you can take the medical - case numbers start with an acronym for the embassy (for example a case number of NWD2008521001 would be New Delhi (NWD), 2008 (year), 521 (day in year) 001 (order number of the day's cases)). Without the case number, it would be more involved joining the medical to your file, hence they want you to take medical after NOA2 case number is received fro the NVC.

  12. Is there a way of getting to a full editor rather than the WYSIWYG one?

In the December Filers thread in K-1 Progress Reports, one of the users is trying to keep a list of special posts within the thread as it is now over 60 pages long. I did do hotlinks for her originally, pointing to the individual posts, but this time when I posted a new message with them in, the hotlinks were removed, although they have seemed to stick on a quoted reply

Anyway, what I was wondering is if there was a way to see the tags within the post rather than the final showing (i.e. see rather than just the link).
