Courthouse wedding with k1 visa

For those who chose to do a courthouse wedding after receiving their k1 visa for various reasons, what was your experience? 
Is the beneficiary required to only show their passport as identification? 
Any unexpected difficulties?

It depends on the requirements of the court where the wedding will take place.  Call the court clerk.

 

Mrs. T-B.-to-be's passport was acceptable, as I recall.

 

I (the USC) had to provide my SSN, and I had no idea where my card was.  Fortunately, the court was close to home, so I ran back to find any official governmental document with my SSN on it.  I had a Series EE savings bond.  I showed it; the clerk checked briefly with her supervisor, accepted it, and said, "This is the first time that anyone has presented a savings bond as ID."

I was thinking that also 

 

We don’t have the visa yet. Our interview is next month and I’m considering the courthouse wedding as it seems like a good option. I am in Missouri

 3.  Each application for a license shall contain the Social Security number of the applicant, provided that the applicant in fact has a Social Security number, or the applicant shall sign a statement provided by the recorder that the applicant does not have a Social Security number.  The Social Security number contained in an application for a marriage license shall be exempt from examination and copying pursuant to section 610.024.  After the receipt of the application the recorder of deeds shall issue the license, unless one of the parties withdraws the application.  The license shall be void after thirty days from the date of issuance.

Since your SO has not arrived yet, when they arrive, it would still be prudent to get an SSN - rather than waiting to get it via AOS - even if you don't absolutely need it for the marriage license.

Having an SSN allows you to get joint accounts and other things that might drag if you wait for EAD/AP/GC.  Just FYI.

Different counties in a state might also have different required documents. Our county requested my birth certificate with a certified translation which I had so it wasn’t a problem, I remember looking in a county over and they didn’t have that requirement.

I’ll have to call them and find out the requirements for our county than. They should have universal requirements for this kind of thing, especially with the amount of immigration taking place now.
