My experience is very different from yours. At least here in Buffalo/NY I never had a bad experience by being an immigrant. Actually, people are genuine curious about my background and immigration history.

That's like saying "cake eaters are not a protected group" if a pastry store refuses to sell a cake based on, e.g, customer's race (a protected group). I get it that businesses can decide for themselves which types of IDs are acceptable (so de facto they can discriminate). But if there was a discrimination case here, it would be based on national origin, which, in turn, would be a violation of Title II (public accommodations) of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

OP was not denied vape stuff because OP was German.

 

By all means though, go spend $500K pursuing this in court.

I don't think it was a case of discrimination, based on what you explained. My point is that if it was (hypothetically speaking) a case of discrimination, it wouldn't be because the OP was a vaper. I'm also pretty sure a business can't refuse someone a service just because they e.g. "sound foreign." That is, "national origin" doesn't have to be specific.

I know it will only take a few weeks to get a SSN now, and this isn’t really a life threatening problem or anything, but it still didn’t feel good to be asked to leave.

Yeah sucks, I'm german too, but when I moved to California I was able to get driver's license immediately- they have a provision for that. But every state is different unfortunately 😕

I know nothing about Vape Shops but I do know something about Alcohol sales, back then you had a book, quite comprehensive, that listed all the forms of ID, Drivers Licenses, Passports, so you could check if something out of State was legitimate.

 

Surprised Vape Shops do not do the same.

 

I might still have my copy somewhere, just remembered the name of the issuer - TIPS.

There's a bar close to my campus and of course they check IDs of EVERYONE, even if they look 65+. They also have a list of acceptable IDs, and if I remember correctly, a foreign passport is accepted but not any other foreign ID. Interestingly, Green Card is explicitly listed as NOT acceptable. (Mike E explained why, so now I get it.)

Here in California, at age 50 I was once denied buying a pack of smokes because all I had for ID at the moment was my US Passport since it was in my car and I left my wallet with my drivers licence at home.  The issue is the cashier is a minimum wage employee who has been threatened with termination should they ever sell tobacco to a minor without ID.  I'm a bit older than 50 now and was just carded last week for for some beer at a 7/11 in Las Vegas.  When I said "r u serious" the cashier explained he had to scan the barcode on a licence or ID for the transaction to even ring up on his register.
