Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin fatally shot a cinematographer and wounded a director when he discharged a prop gun on a movie set in New Mexico on Thursday, authorities said.

Baldwin shot Halyna Hutchins, the photography director of "Rust", and Joel Souza, the film's director, at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, a production location south of Santa Fe, according to the Santa Fe Sheriff's Department.

Hutchins was transported by helicopter to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Souza was taken by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical center to undergo treatment for his injuries. The severity of his injuries could not immediately be determined. https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/alec-baldwin-fires-gun-movie-set-killing-cinematographer-authorities-say-2021-10-22/

I still am scratching my head as to how this happened. Since the death of Brandon Lee in 1993, I thought that such events were a thing of the past.. but today I've seen numerous comments from people that work in the industry saying how COVID has caused big cutting corners, unsafe practices, even claims of using poor quality 'prop ammo'? These days movies like John Wick are all about as many guns and ammo as possible, and usually safety is paramount. So how did this happen exactly? Was there no stunt or propmaster on set? Was there no shields? And why would he fire at them point blank directly? I remember that Michael Massee often said that the shooting of Lee weighed heavily upon him for the rest of his life. Let's hope Baldwin was not goofing around, or that the director compelled him to do something unsafe.

Why would he be firing in the direction of two of the directors?

After Hexum died in 1984, you would think actors understood that every gun is lethal and loaded, blanks or not.  And Baldwin was acting in  1984.

The only thing I could think is that they wanted a close up? I know that there was a big lawsuit after Lee's death which paid out a considerable sum to his family and there was a push to really secure how weapons are handled on sets because no studio wanted to go through that again. I remember that Massee was named in the suit, even though he fired the gun it was not found to be his fault... but I could see Baldwin getting involved in similar litigation. The DA at the time declined charges even though he found the production company negligent.

Someone that has never taken a gun safety class might say something like that.  Not really sure why even a prop gun would have been pointed at people off camera.

It looks more and more like it was a live round, not just the gas discharge from a blank, which can be dangerous.

Why would you need live rounds on a movie set?

No way in hell it was a blank.  You'd have to be VERY close to hurt anyone, and even then it would be more of a flash burn.

And... two people shot?  Lots of reasons for me to think it was on purpose, or someone was setting him up.

One of the most arrogant a-holes of all time.  He probably was joking around, or worse.  No way you accidentally point a prop gun at a non-actor on the set.  Wouldn't be surprised to find out he was having one of his anger management fits.  What it was loaded with remains to be seen.  I had no idea, but I assumed prop guns could not fire a projectile.  I guess not.

I remember watching a tv show a long time ago about movie props and they were talking about prop guns. I remember they said the same safety rules are supposed to be observed when handling a prop gun as when handling a real gun.

Cause even a blank can be dangerous. I gave a buddy a 5.56  blank back in the day. He put it in his mini-14. Pointed it at the window and fired. Blew his windows out

No, let's not be kind to Alec

There have been a number of suggestions, from the conservative press as much as elsewhere, that we should go easy on poor Alec Baldwin [...]
