Why congressman?  They cannot expedite anything.  There are instructions for expediting a case via the consulate or USCIS, along with documentation to back up your request.

via the consulate? what is that?

I hear everybody talking about congressman saying that it helped their case move forward so i’m confused

A Congressperson has no authority or influence over USCIS or DOS.    As @Jorgedig said, there are channels to expedite if you qualify.

Many people on this forum are taking about expediting EAD through congressman.

EAD approved after congressman submitted expedite request

Timeline Request

PD date is july 10 for 130/765/131/485 family based AOS via national benefit center. last week congressman put an expedite request in for 131 which was denied. then this week we did the 765 expedite and online today it says 'new card is being produced' after 4 business days. my question is whether the 131 will be on this 'card' since online it is not updated to show that the new card is being produced for the 131 but only the 765. I did file both at the same time back in July.”

A Congressperson can request a status.....but that is all.  They cannot influence a decision.

hi there,

I’m about to expedite my case via congressman but i would appreciate some help! what should i do to the congressman?

any tips!

thanks

The way you started was a bit confusing and made it sound like you wanted them to put an expedite request in on your behalf. Now that we established that you already put in a request we can move forward.

The congress person can inquire about your case. You'll basically give them all the facts and ask them to inquire about your case on your behalf.

Yes we've seen some post saying they received a decision after their congress person got involved but we've seen at least as many who only received the generic answer they've gotten before from USCIS. So it's the truth, they can't force USCIS to work any faster or force them to make a decision. They can only ask about the status. Try it but don't be disappointed if it doesn't work out like you hope.

After you put in your expedite request, did USCIS got back to you and asked for proof of your claims? Did you sent them what they wanted? How far back was that?

Hi there, first thank you so much for your constructive answer! I really appreciate it.

So, I contacted them via emma, a day after it was updated to ''Expedite request received'', and it's been sitting like that for 6 weeks...

One thing many people do not understand with immigration is that nothing is ever fast. And when you expedite something, it does not mean immediate.  An expedite is an ask. It is not an obligation by immigration. They don't have to expedite anything, even if you have a valid reason. All you are doing is requesting it and hoping they do it for you. And even if you ask, it doesn't mean they will act promptly. It is frustrating to many, but this is the nature of immigration. We move at their pace. They call the shots.

But even if your expedite is approved, it still will take some time. Things still need to happen. We have seen cases of people getting expedites, yet it still took weeks and even months before anything happened with their case.

Also, as other members were saying about congresspersons, they are just an liaison for your case. When you contact them, all they have the ability to do is inquire about your case. The cannot request anything, even an expedite. Using a congressperson is often mentioned on here because they come in handy when cases are outside of normal processing times.

“When starting an immigration journey, the best advice is to understand that sacrifices have to be made... whether it is time, money, or separation; or a combination of all.” - Unlockable
