If my immigrant spouse eventually uses medicaid or other federal means test benefits will the government come after me to foot the bill? Need to double think before signing up for anything O.O

Has anyone heard about the government going after anyone recently after trump administration changes?

If so, they certainly do not come here to report it.

 

It is a commitment and a contract bound by a signature, to be taken seriously.  Personally, there are approximately two people in the world I would sign one for.

It is absolutely something to be taken seriously. I signed one for my ex-husband (now a citizen) and one for my husband who I'm going through AOS with right now. I thought about both seriously even though I know both of my spouses were/are perfectly capable of providing for their own needs because you never know when there's going to be a reversal of fortune. On the other hand, I also looked at it as a sign of how serious I was in my commitment to my marriages to them both. If I had refused to sign the I-864, neither could adjust status based on their marriage to me.

 

This is something you need to consider before you get married. To refuse to sign the I-864 after you've brought your partner to the US, or married someone already here on another visa, and assured them you were in it for forever is, in my opinion, very callous.

It does happen.  At an immigration clinic I have know to volunteer at we had a case where the petitioner's 1/2 siblings petitions were at the NVC and it was determined that his previous CR1 and CR2s had received assistance and there was a significant balance liable.  The liability can last forever since the petitioner is only released once the beneficiary has 40 quarters of qualifying SS payments, becomes a citizen leaves the US or dies.  I know lawyers got involved and it was quite a mess.
