Hello. My husband arrived in the US by way of a K3 Visa in January 2013. He is now a permanent resident. He is from Turkey and is planning a trip back to Turkey in February 2021.

His passport that he used to gain entry to the US that contains his K-3 visa and entry stamp has expired. The Turkish consulate advised that he will need to go in person, apply for a new passport and send his expired passport with his application. They WILL NOT return his expired passport with the  K-3 visa to him. Once his new passport is issued, his expired passport will be destroyed.

Does my husband need to have his original passport with his K-3 visa, entry stamp and A# to apply for citizenship/naturalization? Will he need this passport at anytime durning the naturalization process?

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. His appointment to renew his passport is this Thursday so we want to ensure he does not renew his passport if he will need his passport with the K-3 visa at any point during the naturalization process.

Has anyone here had to renew their home country passport prior to obtaining US citizenship?

Many thanks!

The instructions for N400 do say to bring current and expired passports to the interview, but it is not required for the application.  I would take pictures of the passport bio and visa pages of the one that is expiring so you at least have that for the interview.

Good Luck!

Thank you so very much that is very helpful. Yes, we have pictures of the expired passport. I am also going to have my husband get a letter from the consulate stating that they will keep and destroy his original passport upon issuing a new one. I am also going to have him write an affidavit stating the copies are certified true copies of his expired passport and have both he and the consular sign it and then pay to have them notarize it. Hopefully that will be good enough!

That is what it sounds like, a K3 was a multiple entry 2 year visa so would have expired at its latest January 2015.

Yes he does. Had once since about July 2013. But that isn’t the concern. We are applying for his citizenship and when we have interview etc. they ask for him to bring current and expired passports. As he’s getting his passport renewed, and we were advised he wouldn’t be getting his passport with the expired entry visa in it, I didn’t know if copies and a notarized affidavit would be sufficient.

My IO checked all the pages that had US entry stamps on them. I’d make copies of those just in case.
