Trump contradicts Pompeo, plays down alleged Russian role in cyberattack

President Donald Trump suggested Saturday that China might have been behind a cyberattack affecting multiple U.S. government agencies and companies, despite Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s allegation hours earlier that Russia was likely behind the attack.

The assertion adds confusion to an already complex situation, as cybersecurity workers strive to figure out a hack that came to light less than week ago. At that time Reuters reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that attackers were affiliated with Russia.

...

A U.S. official confirmed to NBC News on Saturday that White House officials were planning to issue a statement on Friday that would say Russia was responsible for the cyberattack but were told to stand down. The Associated Press reported on the White House’s plans earlier on Saturday. Two officials told NBC News that Trump’s tweets had caught White House off guard.

Sure is good to be the Russians for about 30 more days.

White House officials had drafted a statement assigning blame to Russia for the attack and were preparing to release it Friday afternoon but were told to stand down, according to people familiar with the plans. Officials initially weren't told why the statement was pulled back.

Seems like I'm always doing the research you true-believers ought to be doing yourselves. And I'm sure the usual "it's too much to read" and "fake media" "liberal bias" "I can't hear you lalalala" excuses will be the reply. It's ok. As I said, I'm just countering the narrative. No desire to push ice bergs with rowboats.

- Make declaration of A (if he were a Russian asset this is how he'd act)

- Request how one observes A (your experience observing Russian assets and how Trump is acting like one)

- Make declaration of B (Trump ties to Russia)

- Insist one provided factual information of A because they gave a million links of what is presumed to be B

Indeed, this is the Russia conspiracy debate in a nutshell. Relevant meme.

As I keep saying, I'm not here to change you mind. You could read every single one of those well sourced articles and still deny. Just here to counter the conspiracy theory narratives that have zero basis in reality.

I absolutely have never said anyone here is lying. I have said sources are bogus, I have said people are factually incorrect, I have said people are promoting a false narrative. I don't accuse people of lying specifically because I try to give peole the benefit of the doubt that they are just mislead, rather than pushing false theories they know to be untrue.

I have, however, accused one person of being a humbug, but that person has been dead for 150 years. In any case, my apologies to the Johnson descendants for the possibly accurate but nonetheless vile besmirchment of their ancestor.

In any case, Obama didn't spy on the Trump campaign. I just googled it for you, here's the top from hit: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/live-blog/first-presidential-debate-trump-biden-n1241282/ncrd1241514#blogHeader
