We got the biometrics appointment letter in the mail today, it says it’s only in reference to the I-485 and the I-765 though. Will we need to go to another biometrics appointment for the I-131? Thanks!

While this is true quite a couple people have received and had to attend biometrics appointments for the I131. I blame 2020 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Many that attended have reported back they were told they didn't need to

My guess is that they don't take biometrics for AOS I-131 because that case gets consolidated into I-765 and they'll just issue you a combo card rather than a paper advance parole (I-512L).

I know that other advance parole applications (e.g. via DACA, TPS, T/U Visas, and similar categories) require biometrics.

Contradictions without citations only make you look dumb.

How do you imbed biometrics onto a piece of paper?  You don't.

Also, biometrics only needs be captured once.  The same capture can be used for any and all applications that might require it

Biometrics are used mainly for an FBI background check, so if your case ends up falling out of processing times chances are that the hold's with the FBI rather than with USCIS workers taking a bit too many coffee breaks.

While it is true that these days Green Cards and EADs contain RFID chips which likely contain biometric information, other documents issued by USCIS e.g. refugee travel documents, re-entry permits, naturalization certificates, and certificates of naturalization, do not appear to have those (I went digging on the travel documents and wasn't able to find any evidence of them being biometric despite being in the form of passport-esque booklets). Guess what, the applications for each of these still do require biometrics to be taken. Moreover, USCIS does collect biometrics for change of status applications (e.g. I-129, I-539) even though the only thing that you'll get issued from that is an approval notice with a new I-94 printed on it.

Moreover, how long your biometrics remain valid is a matter of policy. USCIS will generally reuse old biometrics up to 18 months since they were taken, due to Covid they've been reusing older ones, though I'm not sure where the cutoff is right now. But as somebody that's been under DACA for 7 years (Initial application + 4 renewals, 4 of which I had biometrics taken for and 1 waived due to covid) I can assure you that they take them more often than once per lifetime.

I've seen applicants that just filed I-131 for AP with the I-485 and only got 1 biometric notice for "I485" They then eventually received the I-512L.

Best answer for those applying along with AOS.

Dial the clock back to the years before combo cards, when all advance parole documents were on paper.  There was no biometrics for the I-131.  The biometric letter contained two barcodes (I-485, I-765).
