K1 to US approval with relatives

Hi! I'm new here and my current fiancee is living in California. We are currently planning for a best way to get me there to get our family complete, and right now we are discussing which is the best path to take.

We know for a fact that USCIS conducts background checking and calls. I've left home because of a toxic family, and have been living independently for the past few years.

They don't know that I'm engaged and are planning to get married, sometime within the next 2 years (delayed due to CoviD).

I'm just worried, will our petition get compromised, or will it have any adverse effect if they call my parents?

Any tips or advice will be gladly appreciated, thank you, and keep safe to all of you.

Why would they call your parents? This is your and your partners application, not your parents.

Background checks are done with federal police, court documents etc may be required if applicable. highly doubt they’ll call family members.

I was just curious, because some people here in the Philippines, as much as I hate to admit, have different views.

I just want to help my fiancee, and I want our family to be complete.

We have a ton of stuff as evidence, witnesses and everything. We'll be looking to file it within the next year, after we take a vacation in Singapore. Thanks for the input, and stay safe!

Yes, both USCIS and DOS will conduct background checks.

It is possible for them (DOS specifically, once you get to the consulate stage) to conduct a field investigation that may contact relatives or neighbors.

That said, it is not common. It's typically only the case when they already suspect issues (it's way too time consuming to do it regularly). And it's very likely not an issue here as you do not appear to be close to them. If you were to say that your SO met the parents and they approved of the relationship or something, checking with them may or may not be relevant. If you are not close, there is nothing to verify with them.

I'm just afraid that I might lose the chance to be with my fiancee and kid because my relatives have a different view than me.

I'm worried on that part because I'm a very private person, I'm not gonna talk about anything in my personal life in a detailed manner, and I wonder if that will backfire on me.

Unfortunately nothing is private when it comes to immigration, you need to fully disclose everything pertaining to your application.. K1, AOS, ROC etc have tonnes of personal questions that you will need to be prepared to answer fully and provide various forms of evidance to substantiate... this will include personal details about your relationship and any children associated with the application / immediate family

I'm sorry, what I meant by being private is I rarely let people around me know about my life or my plans.

If Immigration and other offices ask for information, I am more than willing to provide them with the facts.

I just don't want the idea wherein they might chance upon calling a relative who is against my plan, and the whole application blows over because of that.

You should not have a worry as most people who are "good" citizens in their own country go on to get a visa and then exercise that visa, marry, and live happily. You're no exception to this. There is a sub-forum where many Filipinos discuss the immigration process for USEM. I'll post the link below. Also, USEM is one of the easiest embassies to receive a visa from. I doubt you will have a problem.

There's a whole lot of other worse things, and I hope you don't experience/be a victim of it.

I was speaking specifically about it as a source of immigration information.  The Filipino grapevine is right up there next to Facebook and YouTube

Oh I see. My bad, the Filipino grapevine is also another term for the bad traits my fellowmen have.

I'm not familiar with it, care to enlighten?

If it makes you feel better, I'm on the same boat. I left my family's home at 21 and had not been in contact with them. I dont have a relationship with them prior to me immigrating. I lived on my own. They dont like me and I keep it at that.

I worked, worked and worked. Met my husband in the process, immigrated via K1. No issues during any of the processes. No RFEs, interview got even waived. But there was real bad blood between us (me and my family in PH). we only reconciled after I got my Greencard.

Pinoy Ako! ^_^

I'm sorry with what happened with you and your family in the past. I'm happy for you and thank you so much for sharing your experience.

I'll keep everything you told me in mind. I'll just hope for things to go as smoothly as possible.
