Question: Do I need to update my SS right away or can it wait until the summer ? It still has my maiden name for the last 10 years. I'm a teacher and I don't pay into SS anyway.

It can definitely wait. I had a name change but waited for about 8 months before I updated my info with SSA, because the offices in the area were closed to in-person services, wasn't an issue at all.

What could potentially be an issue is if you had a name change and your state's DMV verifies your info with SSA, then DMV won't issue you a new drivers license until you have updated your info with SSA first. I still had two years left on my license so that wasn't an issue, still driving with my old drivers license.

I just wonder why do we even need to update SSA? From what I've read, USCIS automatically updates the SSA about the citizenship status after 2-3 weeks from naturalization. What would exactly the updating of SSA personally, do if you already had a regular SSN card and didn't change your name?

I saw this that had some reasons.

For some they do, for some they don't. For your own peace of mind you should have it done, so they're not missing to update your info.

Other than ImmiGeek, anybody else received back the naturalization certificate ? Mine has been 2 weeks that I received the passport and card but no certificate yet.

I have seen cases where it took 2 months, I'm afraid you can only wait. You could try to call the passport agency and ask if they have shipped it, I guess, but not sure how much info they actually have.

For me it only took a couple of business days, was very lucky.

hi everyone, thought I'd add my timeline in here. got my passport today, it only took exactly 3 weeks from the day I dropped my application at USPS to passport book in hand. i opted for both expedited processing and shipping (which said 5-7 weeks processing). i guess they are not backlogged anymore? I got old gen version.

how long does it usually take to receive the passport card and naturalization certificate back? hoping I get both soon!

2/17 USPS drop off

3/22 Received at processing center, status was "in process". Locator: 69 (New Hampshire)

3/8 USPS envelope said passport was shipped this day.

3/9 Passport book in hand. I was checking the status everyday and it did not change at all until today when the passport book was already in my mailbox so to speak. I saw it in Informed Delivery first and when I checked the passport tracking site after, the status just changed to Approved. So it seems like tracking is all over the place.

Hello,

I'd like to share my passport application timeline as might be useful for comparison as a new data point.

2/18 applied in USPS for card and passport book. Paid for both ways express and expedited.

2/22 In process with locator number "69".

3/8 Approved

3/9 Mailed with a USPS tracking number

3/10 Received a old gen. passport book in mail.

One thing I noticed is that once the status changed from "Approved" to "Mailed", they provided me with the USPS tracking number, but later on after 5-6 hours, when I checked it had changed back to "Approved" and still is. So Basically, it might be a system glitch, but looks like they share the tracking number and if you don't see it by chance, you'll assume it used to be "Approved" and still is "Approved" although in the meantime it had already one change.
