Does anyone know if you can send a certified copy of your Naturalization Certificate to apply for a passport or it must be the original? Thanks

Must be the original per requirement by DOS.

This question comes up over and over. DOS requires the original. I'm not aware of anyone actually securing a passport successfully with a certified copy. Is anyone here aware of someone who did?

I’m aware of someone who tried and it was rejected - this despite the instructions saying a certified copy is acceptable.

The frustrating part is that this information about certified copies comes from some USCIS officers. Mine told me that certified copy of naturalization certificate from USCIS will act like original. I have two copies with USCIS seal but passport office still wanted original. So I see why this question comes up over and over. You expect that federal employees know what they are talking about but they should just stick to their field of expertise and don’t offer advises like this if they don’t know for sure…

Applied for expedited US Passport and Book for myself, wife and kids on August 9th.

Status changed for wife and kids on August 12th to In Process, mine is still showing Not Available.

We attached the money draft with all applications.

The locater begins with 79. Which office? Also is it typical for not all family members to show In process status even if you filled together?

Processing location is Houston, Texas. And yes, that's completely normal that they process all of your files independently of each other. It would be a coincidence if they all get processed together actually. They could even be processed in different locations at times. Don't worry about that!

Thanks for the info. I thought the USPS guy said he is filling all application together as a family application but the book and docs. will return individually.

do you know how do they choose which field office to send the applications?

For reference of some people who want to do the normal or routine passport processing application, this is how my application went through:

Applied in one of the USPS in Las Vegas

applied June 3, 2021 Routine Processing

Document Control Number Starts with 68 (New Hampshire)

Check cashed June 29, 2021

Status “In process” on June 30, 2021

Status “Approved” on August 12, 2021

Status “Shipped” on August 13, 2021

Received Passport Book on August 16, 2021 (10.5 Weeks)

“Patience is a Virtue”. Don’t worry too much with passport processing application IF we don’t have out of the country travel soon. We can’t even travel abroad the way we used to be, there are 50 states to visit, enjoy and explore. Good Luck Everyone!!!
