That’s the problem.....my gut says to “get the hell out now.....do what you love, start over” and my heart says “you have people here that you love and are attached to”.

I’m 48 years old married to an Algerian that is unable to file for ROC for the next four months....plus I have 2 big dogs (both 5 years old) that I am unwilling to leave behind.

I haven’t traveled in four years. And I miss it. There’s no words to describe how much I miss it......

My gut says to “eeffff it”. And to “live the life you imagined”. I think I’m gonna start working on that.

Himself is in Hospice care as of this morning. As it is the VA, of course the process was not without screw ups. It is all well and good to cancel orders, but new ones need to be entered.

When I arrived this morning he had a respiratory rate of 72. Unrousable.  I thought he might have taken the final decision out of my hands.

Rang the nurse twice with no response, so sent for the charge nurse. She paged the medical team twice with no answer.

So being me, I rang the Doc myself. 2 minutes and he was on the spot. Did heads roll? Youbetchabygolly.  New team, from Vanderbilt.

After tinkering most of the afternoon with morphine we found the sweet spot.

Also had to bite my tongue when dealing with the 'tech". He doesn't need a finger stick, he in won't be getting insulin. He doesn't need his vitals taken every two hours, they are irrelevant to the process. And do NOT stand next to the bed and bellow "how are you feeling today"? He can't tell you. He doesn't even know you are there.  Go away. Stay there.

I'm so sorry to hear this. When my dad was placed on hospice care at our local hospital (not VA) we couldn't have wished for better care. Sending my thoughts and prayers to both of you.

Vitals every two hours? Do they not have a different hospice protocol?

We forgot to mention that, last night, we spent Many (2+1) -- yes, Many (2+1) -- hours searching for hand-sanitizer, search we man.

The ONLY stuff available is made in and ships (in Many weeks) from China, revoltin' development man.

We can understand the wish of American manufacturers to reserve and send their supplies to first responders, si man.  However, if the rest of us can't find any (or masks, or gloves), then the first sanitizer that we'll see will be when we're admitted to the hospital because we couldn't sanitize ourselves, egad man.

We took a break from furious fulfillment of Pre-Owned Toilet Seat orders to mow the lawn, industrious we man.

Oh but wait, there is more.

I arrived this morning early, and it is a jolly good thing I did.

His entire bed was very low, I mean almost too low for me to bend down to. His head was at 8° when it is never meant to be less than 30° He can't breathe when it is that low. He looked utterly terrified.  I yanked the head of the bed up and he pretty much began to gasp. I hit the call button.

I noticed he was shivering hard. Not a usual symptom for him. Why?  I yanked the sheet off. Would you believe some numpty, in an attempt to reduce a fever, had tucked bags of ice under both arms? That had fallen open and half melted? That the rest of the ice was stuck to his skin? The sheets were wet, everything under him was wet, and some idiot had put a gown on him and gone to all the trouble to tie it up in double knots all along under his back.

No answer to the call button, so I hit it again. Some bored voice, do you want something? A Nurse. Now.

She arrived just ahead of the medical team and the transplant doc. We did have the most wonderful conversation. Most of it mine.

We agreed, not that anyone had much chance to say, that all of the above is totally unacceptable. The chart showed a 0300 temp of 99. So when was that ice placed there? Apparently at midnight.

The night nurse gets the credit for this. The nursing supervisor was paged and read her pedigree.

I asked today, that they not wake him at night every two hours to turn him. Leave him the heck alone and stop waking him up. No ice. How about instead the use the fever reducer already ordered?

And more games with meds. He has three bunches of people following him around. Medicine, palliative care, and the transplant heptologist. So one group thinks dilaudid is the best thing. The other says oh no, that is soooo addictive!  The transplant doc, who by the way is driving this bus, placed orders this morning for morphine and a fentanyl patch. The junior doc had the brass to cancel it. Apparently reinstated when the error of his ways was pointed out to him. Still no sign of that when I had to leave.

This is nuts, right? It's not just me with ridiculously high expectations and expecting an impossible standard of care.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Eh ma'am, welcome to the world of hospitals -- the more dysfunctional, the worse (= the VA).

Take names and start reporting people (the same day) to the State Board of Nursing.

If they do it again, embarrass them -- very loudly -- in as public an area as possible.

To add to your thrilling news, we forgot to mention above that we nuked a large hill of hormigas del fuego, fire ants man.

This is absolutely disgusting. Zero reason for this bull. They are a hospice what in the world do they care about something being addictive.

When I first moved here I saw similar issues in the nursing home they sent my MIL to for rehab when she broke her hip. One of the many reason I will not go back to nursing here in the US. So many things I saw that would get you charged in Canada were happening here and ppl just ignored it.

We have just done a "delayed-Mrs. T-B." impersonation, and without her knowledge, we ape she man.

We first out-cleaned our bins with AA, AAA, C, & D-cell batteries, long overdue man.

Kept the newest, trashed the oldest, and will try to return still-valid ones for store credit, attempt we man.

We will NOT (will not! will not!) need to buy AA batteries for the rest of our natural & eternal lives, no man.

We then went through bags, bins, & stacks of Mini-B.'s/Mrs. T-B.'s already-culled books, previous project she man.

We have Many (2+2) boxes to take to Half-Price Books if latter ever reopens, si and egad and sigh man.

Those not taken by the nearby HPB, we shall take to the next-nearest HPB, $i and $i man.

However, this will not occur until April Many'th (2x2x2x2x2-2th) at earliest, no and sigh man.

We shall probably compete with Manyzens of others who did the same during casa-confinement, sigh man.

We wonder whether HPB will want to buy anything at all, given no income for these Many weeks, wonder we man.
