California's Prop 47 leads to rise in shoplifting, thefts, criminal activity across state

SAN FRANCISCO – In a lighted garage on one of San Francisco's busiest streets, a young man in baggy trousers and messy brown hair pulled down his pants. He had been hiding two pairs of stolen jeans with the tags still on them. He handed them to another man waiting nearby, took some money, pulled up his pants and headed back into another store on Market Street — home to the city's high-end designers and big-chain retail shops.

The incident wasn't a one-off. These brazen acts of petty theft and shoplifting are a dangerous and all-too-common consequence of Proposition 47, a referendum passed five years ago that critics say effectively gives shoplifters and addicts the green light to commit crimes as long as the merchandise they steal or the drugs they take are less than $950 in value. The decision to downgrade theft of property valued below the arbitrary figure from felony to misdemeanor, together with selective enforcement that focuses on more “serious” crimes, has resulted in thieves knowing they can brazenly shoplift and merchants knowing the police will not respond to their complaints, say critics.

Drove through there the other day on our way to Death Valley.  At least the part we saw until we got on I44 was a mess.

Due to Meth and Opiates, crime in rural areas is above the national average.  Cities have been trending safer since the 90s.  Source : Malcom Gladwell book.

I'm sure Eugene and Berkeley are relatively safe....I have lived in both urban and rural areas of the US and I know where it was safer to raise my family. There was a rural meth problem where I lived. But, when you go from 0 incidents to 4 a year in a small county such as where my sons were raised it looks like a huge increase but as a practical matter I never saw or was affected by any drug related crime.

Well I can attest that this rural town is a haven of crime, and some even say that we are actually more violent than B'more (not in homicides but everything else). We actually also have a high rate of orphans due to OD parents and a scary high amount of homelessness, human trafficking, and rapes. I would say though, that some cities have trended safer, but it depends on the city and what sort of crime. That being said though... there are still areas in B'more that I feel safer in than in this town for sure.

And what does all this have to do with the OP?  The fact that these shoplifting rings popping up as a consequence of Prop 47 seems telling.  CA has rural areas as well, and I imagine some of this is occurring there as well as in the major retail centers of the cities.

The thread changed while you were out. "Most bastons of liberal rule are heading towards 3rd world countries " has been tabled.

So how do you explain the rise in these shoplifting rings related to what I am sure was considered a very progressive proposition in CA?
