Moving from UK to New York

Hi everyone

 

My brother and I are looking at moving to New York and we are wanting to know about employers who are willing to sponsor people for the greencard.

 

I am a first year accounting student while my brother has no degree at all, and is not I retested in one.

 

We both have a good amount of work experience.

 

We have dual citizenship for both New Zealand, our country of origin, and Great Britain where we now live.

 

What companies would be willing to sponsor us for the greencard?

Accounting isn’t an area that immediately jumps out as one that is likely to obtain a work visa. It’s normally focused on certain specialized areas that are in demand and they are unable to find anybody locally (with a compatible wage being offered). This isn’t so much about an employer but requirements for the type of visa that puts restrictions on What types of jobs are suitable for petitioning a foreign worker.

 

I hope you do find somebody to petition you, but I’m just trying to set a realistic expectation here. Maybe once you are at a more senior level or so, more opportunities may become available.

 

For the time being, normal job search sites would be the best approach. They usually let you filter on work eligibility, or at least state of they are willing to petition a worker.

 

Edit: Actually, while not a long term solution, you can look at look at local employers to get started, then possibly an L visa to transfer to their US branch of they have one.

I agree with @geowrian in their assessment.  The only thing I would add is maybe find a company that works on both sides of the Atlantic.

OP’s country of chargability would be New Zealand.

We would try the lottery with our NZ passports if we couldn't get a sponsor.

 

We thought this way we would sort 2 areas - job and visa.

OP cannot try under UK. Country of chargability is a single country, not based on or tied to citizenship.

I am saying that even if UK did fall under DV, they couldn’t do so anyway.

It's based on the country of birth. So I would apply for the lottery as a New Zealander.

 

I got my UK citizenship based on my dad being born in the uk

unfortunately it’s going to be hard to get an employer to sponsor you when you don’t have existing relationship. For the immigrant visas it’s a long and expensive process (I am on EB3 and just had my interview a few hours ago actually. Total time working on this has been 16 months) so an employer is unlikely to pursue it for an employee  if they don’t know you 

 

also you guys won’t be derivatives of one another. You would each individually need a job offer

How do you get an existing relationship with an employer?
