Voicemail from USCIS

Hello,

I received a voicemail from USCIS asking me to call them back as soon as possible.  My date on ceac.state.gov did not update though when I received the voicemail.  When I contact the embassy or vice versa, the date updates to the date of last contact.  Does the date not update when USCIS calls?

Are you the petitioner or the beneficiary? It is very strange that USCIS would call you unless this was a tier 2 callback requested by the petitioner......

I am the petitioner.  I did not reach out to USCIS directly but did reach out to my senator requesting assistance.  And in the voice they stated it was an immigration matter and to call as soon as possible.  I tried calling all day yesterday and the phone number provided went straight to voicemail.

It is odd for USCIS to contact you since the case appears to have been out of their hands for almost a year according to your timeline. USCIS doesn't handle the visa side of things, Administrative Processing, etc.

Possibly a fake. Especially if express a sense of urgency and start threatening with deportation, police officers to your house etc.  I got fake IRS and FBI calls, maybe they added USCIS to the mix and they coincidentally got someone in the midst of a process with them. What's the phone number you are trying to call?

It was a 202 area code and possibly a wireless number.  The voicemail was on the phone number I provided in a request to my senator.  She knew my full name and said she was calling about an immigration matter and to call back as soon as possible.  She provided her full name and when I did a reserve lookup on the number the full name provided matched the name associated with the phone number.  It's been two days (not counting holiday and weekend) and I cannot get ahold of her and she hasn't called back.

Ok well knowing your full name is nothing (the scam IRS call had my full name and an old but correct address of mine) but this could be real. But odd its a wireless number and you don't get someone or an automated answer when you call back. Let us know what happens.

This is definitely quite strange.  I can't imagine a USCIS officer using their personal cell phone where you can look up their name.  Unless this person works for your senator.

If I were you, I would be especially cautious.  Do not "verify" any personal information if you talk to this person.  It sounds like it has a high scam-potential to me.  It's about as good as the e-mail I just got from my "CEO" asking me to buy gift cards to give out as bonuses.

You too? Was almost convincing except I knew his personal email address already.

Could it have been the immigration liaison who works for your senator that called and not USCIS? Did the person on the phone specifically say they were from USCIS?

In theory and policy, yes. But contractors at the least do, unfortunately (I don't deal with public facing inquiries directly, but my personal cell phone is on record for as-needed support with a couple federal agencies).
