Have a small question about the AOS filing

Hi there!

I'm really sorry if I'm asking a redundant question, but I'm researching on the AOS at the moment to prepare myself mentally. I have noticed that it is a requirement to submit certified versions of certain documents, such as deed polls and marriage certificates. Do they return any of these certificates back to you? The situation is I had my name changed as a child, and my mother misplaced the original deed poll. So the only document I have right now is a certified copy of it and I only have one of it. Do you think it would be wise if I asked for another copy of the deed poll as an extra one, just in case?

Thank you

Thank you

It is always wise to have multiple of these on hand, issued by the appropriate authority. Before we immigrated I obtained 5 of each of our  official documents. Costly ? Yes .. but easier in country if issue than once we were here in the US

Where does it say anything about submissions to the USCIS for AOS require any original document or certified copy?

YMMV

Of what exactly.

The instructions state a photocopy of anything unless specified.

I sent photocopies of certified copies of everything with no problem. All they want to see is the certified stamp/seal.

I say you may want to research in a correct way starting with reading i485 instructions again:

https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-485instr.pdf

I485 instructions:
Copies. You should submit legible photocopies of documents requested, unless the Instructions specifically state that you must submit an original document. USCIS may request an original document at the time of filing or at any time during processing of an application, petition, or request. If USCIS requests an original document from you, it will be returned to you after USCIS determines it no longer needs your original.

you do not mail the originals. you mail the photocopies of originals. you will want originals to take to any interviews. they do not typically keep them, but they can.

having multiple copies of originals is a good idea
