NYPD hate crimes task force investigating Nazi drawings found at an elementary school

New York (CNN)New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has directed the State Police Hate Crimes Task Force to assist the New York Police Department in its investigation of Nazi drawings found Friday morning at an elementary school in Queens.

"I am appalled and disgusted by the Swastikas and other anti-Semitic symbols of hate that were scrawled in a Queens schoolyard," Cuomo said in a statement. "In New York, we have zero tolerance for such vile acts of anti-Semitism."

Dozens of swastikas, a Nazi eagle and the words "Hail Hitler" (sic) were found drawn in chalk on the pavement of PS 139's schoolyard.

Councilwoman Karen Koslowitz, who represents the district, told CNN her office received photographs from a resident in the apartment building next to the school and immediately informed the police. According to Koslowitz, the area is a predominately Jewish neighborhood.

Why is it crazy exactly though? Easy targets. We have a very large Jewish population in Baltimore and I can remember it happening all the time (and still does). Of course out in this rural county this kind of thing happens a lot sadly...

Well, with the world's largest population of Jews in one city, one would think being with them daily, seeing them, talking to them, living next to them... that people would simply get along with them.  Haven't met one yet that would give me a reason to be anything other than respectful.  Brush shoulders with them on a daily basis, never seen any of them give a reason for maltreatment.

 

NY is supposed to be a city of tolerance, truly a melting pot, diverse; no one group of people makes up more than 50% of the population.  Why target this group?

Because racists gonna racist?  In truth, it's probably a small group of haters that wants to make a name for themselves (back in the 80s in B'more they were very scarily visible.. I'm meaning guys that rode around in military vehicles with swastikas and dressed up as SS... they'd leave flyers, spray paint houses, destroy graveyards, break windows, and beat up people), now they are more underground but still feel bold enough to be horrible. Truth is though anti-Semitism is on the rise, and not just in the US either. The NYT just did a piece a few days ago about the rise of attacks. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/18/nyregion/anti-semitism-brooklyn-new-york.html As it points out, 10-15 incidents were related to one person... but many of the attacks have become very violent, and they are likely involving groups of people.

Honestly, it could just be some edgy teen vandals who did it specifically because they knew it would anger and upset people...trolls basically.

That is usually what it is in our town. However the ideology comes from somewhere in those youths... and what we usually find is that their parents don't mind their behavior too much....

There has to be a reason behind the vitriol.  What is it?  Target them because they are quiet?  Mostly white?  For their faith?  The way they dress?  I don't get it...

Sure that wasn't Rising Sun? I lived in Baltimore in the 80's 90's don't remember any of that, there was a lot of Klan activity in Northern MD, Baltimore didn't see it

Yep. HarCo/CeCo has their own hubs... and that's not counting activity on the lower eastern shore that my Dad remembers in the 60s/70s  but yep, I remember it in Baltimore during the 80s very vividly.

I lived in Essex/ Middle River all through the 80's and 90's. I remember lots of rednecks the overt racism I missed, having grown up in Boston maybe I was immune to it
