What if the cow is a male?

Hint: That is a trick question. There are no male cows.

Exactly. Cow is such a commonly used word that majority of people don't know the distinction.

We could not survive in this household without milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream. At the very least one or the other is consumed daily.

Ever tried organic? it has a much better flavor, and if you go up in fat content, it has an even better flavor. Don't ever do lowfat...

Doesn't matter the type of milk. If it comes out of a cow, even if I can get it past my nose to drink it, inevitably it is rejected and expelled fairly quickly. ;-) Mom used to call me the 'Exorcist Baby'.

Meaning no offense to those who buy "organic", but what does that even mean when it comes to milk? All milk is organic.

The differences come when discussing fat content and pasteurization.   The best tasting milk is fresh from the cow, cream in, no heat applied (IMO).  Can't buy that in stores, unfortunately, only direct from a dairy farm.

Starting a sentence with "meaning no offense" is offensive :D

Organic milk is often from cows that are treated better and get to graze in open pasture. It is also heated to a higher temperature for a shorter amount of time which actually makes it a bit sweeter. The feed isn't treated with pesticides and the cows aren't given hormones and antibiotics, and because organic cows are pasture grazed, they are fed with a higher quantity of red clover than conventional cows, so it has actually been found organic milk contains alot more omega 3 than regular milk, as well as beta carotene and some important vitamins.

Anyway there's no doubt imo that organic milk, eggs(especially eggs!), cheese and meat taste better than non organic. If anyone needs a recommendation for good organic milk, the stonyfield 4% one tastes great, imo.

Sorry, bubba, but all cows get antibiotics and other chemicals if they eat prepared feed.  It may be minimal as long as they are grazing, but it's there.  Ditto chickens via their layer pellets.

Chickens in cages and cows in stalls DO have a harsher life, and their products are not as healthy,  to be sure.  Also, not all farms even have red clover.  But grazing fresh grass is always better than just being force fed grains.

Still... the whole concept of "organic" is mostly a bunch of hype, and causes people to pay more for a product.  I was raised on a farm, and every single chick we ever raised had antibiotics (the most organic, free-range chickens you could imagine),  because all chick started feed has it in the food.  Why? Because the mortality rate is high in the first few days.

City folk are often misled by claims on the food they buy. I have a friend from California who swears that brown eggs taste better than white ones.  He doesn't believe me when I tell him they taste the same if the living conditions are the same; the shell color depends on the breed of chicken.  (Now the toll color will be much different from open range chickens - more orange than yellow).

Read this excerpt from Wiki about "organic", factor in the government aspect of it,  then draw your own conclusions as to whether foods labeled organic are really that much better...

Quote

Meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products labeled “organic” have must come from animals who are “(m)anaged without antibiotics, added growth hormones, mammalian or avian byproducts,or other prohibited feed ingredients.”[5] Farms, processors, and distributors must be inspected by the USDA before they are allowed to use the “organic” label. However, fewer than 5 percent of chickens are raised in accordance with these standards.[6] The “organic” label does not guarantee that animals were treated any better than those raised on conventional CAFOs. The Washington Post reported that large operations are able to sell their eggs as organic because the USDA has "interpreted the word 'outdoors' in such a way that farms that confine their hens to barns but add 'porches' are deemed eligible for the valuable 'USDA Organic' label. The porches are typically walled-in areas with a roof, hard floors and screening on one side."[7] Male chicks who are born on organic or free-range egg farms are still discarded, by the use of lethal gas, because they do not produce eggs.[/quote]

Also, milk which is UHT has the majority of the good bacteria killed.  That's why it lasts longer... it has been sterilized.  Sweeter, perhaps.  But nowhere near as healthy as regular, unpasteurized whole milk.

Sorry, I disagree with those who call it hype, and will continue buying organic, the regulations seem pretty clear cut to me

Quote

Most synthetic veterinary drugs - including antibiotics and growth hormones - are prohibited under organic regulations. In addition, producers of organic meat and dairy products must exclusively feed animals with organic feed, and must prevent contamination of organic feed with antibiotics and hormones. If animals become ill, beef and dairy producers are not allowed to withhold medications that might be needed to restore health. However, if antibiotics are used to treat illness, the beef or dairy producer is not longer allowed to label the meat, milk or cheese as organic.

These regulations are an important part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture 's (USDA's) Organic Foods Production Act.

BTW...I don't prefer brown eggs at all, when I can find organic white ones I do.

The organic milk is the US is the only one that comes similar in taste (and this price) of normal milk in Canada.

Guess I am guilty of perpetuating this belief.  For years, when my kids were small, I would tell them that the brown cows produced chocolate milk.  (I do use Ovaltine as a weekend treat!)

I will say I too am a milk lover.  I consume milk, cheese, or ice cream daily.  Must have at least half and half in coffee.

My youngest of the 4 older kids used to swear that chocolate milk came from brown cows.

He also use to make me switch between white eggs and brown eggs every 2 weeks of groceries. He was 3 and swore white eggs were dinosaur eggs and brown eggs were chicken eggs. I love how kids think.

BTW as someone who has chickens I just want to mention not all chicken feed is medicated. I buy un medicated feed, the medicated stuff is only for coccidiosis. It doesn't help with other things I wish it did but cocci alone is bad and can kill a chick fast.

Also the so called free range and pasture labels are truly a marketing tactic. To be listed as free range one only has to make a pop door for chickens to be able to come out and touch the ground. They never have to actually come out just as long as there is access for so many hours in a day.

As for Pasture raised is pretty much just a move able enclosed coop  or chicken tractor that changes the spot the chickens have access to every so often.

But fresh eggs beat store bought any day. By the time they are sorted, inspected and grade they can be 6+ weeks old before they hit the shelf.

Oh and by law chickens (the meat) and milk cannot have steriods, antibiotics, or other hormones in it. So if a cow is sick they are rejected from the milk production line until all clear. If some how one gets past the whole batch of milk will be rejected.

Yes I know I'm late to the thread but, this one I can actually post in :)
