Thread is moved from Off Topic to the Finding Work in America forum.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

If she is good at her native language and English, she might be able to be a medical translator over the phone. They basically call you to translate doctor's visits.

She could also start her own home business, as she could do whatever she wants and is good at, and control her own hours.

Freelancing (writing, photographing, ...) could also be an option.

Virtual assistants are definitely handy, and they can also work in their own time, and it might just be a few hours a week for one client, so she can just pick one or two clients.

She could also open an online shop if she is good at anything crafty, like sewing, painting, drawing, poster making, jewelry making, ...  or re-selling things (going to local goodwill stores and local moving and estate sales, buying things she thinks will sell well, take a nice picture of it, and try to sell those things online on ebay, etsy, ...)

If she had any dreams of becoming something, this would be the time: does she want to write a book, a blog, or does she want to attempt to be an artist, or learn to code, or ..

It is SO hard staying at home without a job. Drives you crazy.

There is so much to do at home: bake bread, cook, clean, do laundry, garden, perhaps take care of children, grow your own food,  and do home repair.  I suppose that might not be enough for some.  For me, there aren't enough hours....

I need to do deep abstract analytical brain-work, or I go crazy. Hence my suggestions and my comment

A lot of that is busywork in my specific case (baking bread, growing own food, gardening), as there are plenty of alternatives (buying bread, buying food, not gardening). My interest in those things is zero. We don't have kids and we only rent, so cooking,  cleaning, laundry, and home repair are basically an hour to two hours a day if I drag it out. My husband actually does half the household still, because he gets up early and feels awkward leaving it to me, and he insists on doing the cleaning half-half (unless he is making cabinets for the house or something).

I usually statistically analyze data I found or data I have gathered in the past, write articles for academic journals, write research proposals, and pad my resume in different ways, for example with learning a new coding language or getting the hand of a new statistical program.

Completely different situations, especially without kids I would think.

Different strokes for different folks.

But anyway, was just trying to let OP know that if your heart is not in staying at home with the kids, there's no forcing that. She wants to do work, so she will find something. Plenty of stuff to be able to combine.

Yeah, I'm about to finish my math degree with a science minor (7 credits left!) and I do not enjoy statistical analysis in my free time.  I know some programming languages and I'm planning on learning a few more in the next couple of years.   Some of the ones I learned at school are less relevant now.   I grew up in a house with a scientist/professor for a mother and I'm not sure she found it appealing either.    If it brings you joy, then it is what you should do.

There is something really fulfilling to me about growing something, milling it, and then baking with it or canning it.  I'm also not a fan of processed food.  I like sewing clothes and the process of actually making things.  There is a peace that comes with washing and folding diapers.  Living simply means you can turn your mind off.  Not everyone needs that, but I find that I do.

But, I do actually have a work from home job I do for money.  I'd rather not do it, but it is paying my student loans at the moment.  I don't know how OP and his wife feel about this, but I do really feel like it robs time away from the children.  Like I'm doing now, I try and do it while I'm nursing or holding the baby and that is hard.  My productivity is extremely limited and it is like I'm doing half as good at both as I could.

In any case, I'm sure if she really had been interested in legitimate work from home things, she would have found one already.  They exist, but just require a little bit of research.

There’s a surprisingly large amount of work you can do from home, for example I know medical specialists (radiologists) who work from home for a large hospital group, and professionals who do everything from stock research to biomedical writing from home.  There is freelance, contracted and full time work all available. OP has however given no idea of whether his wife is trained in anything specific, what type of work she wants to do, etc. there are probably a lot of options for jobs requiring less specific skills, and different jobs websites to look for different things. Sometimes it’s just figuring out what the correct search term to use for what you want before you find stuff!

i’m glad OP is giving his wife space to do this even though it’s not his first choice. I’ve done both the working mom thing and the stay at home mom thing and don’t have much patience with people on either side who judge the other. At the end of the day a happy fulfilled parent, whatever that means for the individual concerned, is going to be a better parent.

I have tried to apply to those jobs and they want you to pay to start. Are there any that can do that I don't have to pay to start

Huh? Those sound like pyramid schemes, not jobs. Not sure what sites you’ve been searching on. Obviously you need to be among at realistic wages to get legitimate jobs.

Not the best idea for "regular" income....but when I was a stay at home mom I joined focus group websites/agencies and made some pocket money that way, if that's all she's looking to earn.  At the time I was into it full-swing, I was earning average $1,00 a year, only, though...but it was nice to be able to buy my husband a birthday/Christmas gift, plus pay for personal expenses day-to-day without having to wonder where the money would come from for that/continuously ask him for money.   I still do it now from time to time for extra income.

That's IF she wants to be a stay-at-home mom.  If she doesn't, then don't force it on her lest resentment builds up into something bigger later on down the road.

Can you pls inbox me. With websites and perhaps your phone number if that's fine with you... I wanna discuss some more

I’m not giving some internet stranger my phone number, sorry.

look for remote jobs on sites like indeed, even LinkedIn. Again I don’t remember any indication on this thread about education background or work experience or anything like that so it’s hard to be more specific. If there is something she particularly wants to do, ad it in as a search term.
