I’ve stayed south so far. All based around Ho Chi Minh. I’ve heard Americans are not as welcome up north!  I get that. It is interesting visiting museums dedicated to Vietnam’s victory over the US.  It is humbling to see other views of us. I have great respect for the people of Vietnam. Such a loving and caring people.  I truly had an experience that taught me about life and how mankind is a strange beast. My experience there has impacted my entire being. I am a history buff and there is so much I have learned from my time there. I know of no place on earth that has made such an impact on my soul.

Well, I dont know who you heard that from, but pp in the North has nothing against anyone. American, French,... we welcome all of you to our country. And look at me as I am from Hanoi, the capital in the North and I am on my way to be with my American guy. Therefore, if you have a chance to visit Vietnam again, please come to the North, there are also many historical places you can visit.

Yes, I also heard of the less friendly welcome in the north. I have even been told of direct negative interactions, i.e. older street vendor would not serve someone. So it most definitely is real but due to the whole "face" thing in that region, it won't be directly addressed. Truthfully, I believe it is not as widespread as before and should not dissuade you from going. I have been to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, however, I was working so not much free time (only a couple days).  I enjoyed it and did not have any problems with local people. Friends of mine from California have lived in Hanoi for 4 years and love it.

In Hanoi had to get a few beers I think it was called "old Quarter" area (pic below)

That is what I heard about the north too. I have no personal experience but we were warned or maybe it was suggested that we stay south.

I will go up north on the next trip to see for myself.

I do think the main problem with old pp here is not much of them speak English, and sometimes they scare to serve foreigner. It was nothing more than because of language barrier. I work in a hotel myself and have took a lots of foreigner friends around. None of them were treat differently (Americans or not) even when I was not around them.

Bottom line, there are good pp and not so good pp all around the world, maybe pp just havent seen all the good here in Vietnam.
