6 months visa

Hi everyone !!

My sister lives in the US and she is pregnant of her third child. Her husband is a military and he has to go on mission for a year on june 10th 2017.

She is due on august and I would like to go help her for at least 6 months because she can't handle 3 infants on her own.

I am a french citizen. We don't need a visa if we stay in the US less than 90 days but I want to stay longer.

I don't know what type of visa I can ask.

Can you help me on this please ?

If you apply for a B-1 visa and tell them in the interview that your reason is to help your sister with her baby you will almost certainly be refused a visa. Helping with children is considered work and is not allowed on a tourist visa.

 

You might be able to get a J-1 visa as an au pair. This visa is for helping out with children/cultural exchange. The only iffy part is that it would be for your sister. But it's worth looking into as an option. Check and see if you fit the requirements:

refused b1/b2 will mean you cant use ESTA later I think.

I'm 27 years old so I can't apply for the au pair visa

Helping for that reason would likely be denied as its seen as unauthorized work by the consulate as previously mentioned.

 

i agree with those saying go for 90 days.

Too bad then.

 

I personally think you should not even attempt applying for a visitor visa. It's too risky and you might end up losing your WVP privileges. Just go for the 90 days like the others and be glad you have that.

The thing is, I want to get there on july so that she can rely on me for the last month of her pregnancy.

If I only stay 90 days, that means I'll leave one month after the baby is born

Go right before the birth, then return home after 90 days.  Uscis unfortunately isn't concerned with your wants

As highlighted before you would rather go for 90 days then not at all.  Its not us you have to convince!  To the VO it's considered working, even though no money is involved.

Can't use a tourist visa for working, and applying for a tourist visa when you can use VWP is a red flag - the only good reason you have is helping your sister with the kids and that'll get you denied. Time for her to hire an American nanny.

Agreed. You should go right before the birth so you can stay for three months after. In the meantime you sister will have to hire a babysitter or other help. There really isn't anything else you can do.

 

The VWP is amazing thing. Be glad you have even that. Plenty of people here on VJ come from countries where we need tourist visas just to spend one day in the US. Use the 90 day visa-free privilege you have and be grateful for it.

90 days is roughly 3 months. You can go a month before and stay until the baby is two months old. Still iffy because technically you'd be working, but may be your best shot.

Can you just leave the country after 90 days and re-enter the country again after a few weeks. 

It seems cheaper and less hassle to just buy a plane ticket

And a sure way to get turned around at the airport and lose vwp potentially getting an expedited removal
